Hello list,
at the moment it looks like the repository is rather broken. If you want do an
upgrade or change from stable to testing, or if you want to upgrade testing,
be very carefully. Otherwise you might break your system!

You see, there are no packages to be removed. Aptitude wants to remove many
packages, you might want to keep (just for example "blender").
KDE5 will not start correctly any more (there are posts by me related to KDE5
on this list).
It looks for me, the whole testing repository has broken and buggy
dependencies. If you want to try unstable instead: DON`T DO IT! Unstable is
much worse using aptitude: It wants to deinstall lots and lots of applications
related to kde4-libs.
Here too: It leads you to a situation you might not want to!
For a temporary solution, you should change to use apt-get upgrade, but NOT
apt-get dist-upgrade, if it will also destroy your system.
I do not know, if the dependencies in the repos are man made or created
automatically. If manually, just wait, until it is fixed by the maintainers,
if created automatically, you should wait, until the repos are in a better
state due to newer packages or packages with better versions.
Last but not least: I do not want to mourn about the situation, my intention
is more to warn other people, not to crash their systems and additionlly to
show up, where problems exist at the moment. :)

Not quite. I am watching this now since the change to kde5. The main problem are the dependencies between kde4 and kde5 libs. As kde5 wants to deinstall many kde4-libs, it will also deinstall all non-kde apps, which rely on kde4- libs. This is a bad situation and should be fixed soon. At the moment I adviced all my friends, not to do any upgrades. Best Hans

There are more than 150 packages stuck at the moment, on a system with just over 4000 installed. Apt-get dist-upgrade wants to pull about seventy packages, but some are libraries which will be replaced by new versions. Gimp and gnome-mplayer are in the list, which I'm not willing to give up yet. If I get bored, I might mess around with synaptic to see if I can upgrade a few, but clearly there is still significant trouble. OK, I've got it down to 120 packages stuck, almost all KDE and libreoffice, but with another small logjam around aptitude and synaptic. I did hit a small jackpot, upgrading one minor package which brought more than a dozen other packages with it, packages which themselves wouldn't upgrade without a lot of grief. I have in the past fixed logjams of twenty or thirty packages simply by doing the upgrades in the correct order, a level of complexity beyond aptitude, but this lot isn't going to go so easily. Things are improving, about a week ago there were more than two hundred stuck, and as you say, all the compiler-related stuff has cleared. -- Joe

I expect flac, libmusicbrainz5, and libtorrent-rasterbar were adding to the confusion as well. https://release.debian.org/transitions/ I did uninstall ktorrent since I have not been using it anyway and I was finally able to get everything up to date without removing anything I care about keeping. I did have to work at it to find combinations that would not cause a big list of removals. I use Synaptic. First using the default upgrade to get the low hanging fruit. Then making selections from the things that remain. Then going through the list of obsolete packages and selecting packages to purge. If selecting something to purge gives me a list of changes that includes something I want to keep that has a newer version available, and the list of those things is reasonably small, then I will give the OK for that, then switch to 'Custome Filter --> Marked Changes' then change the selection for the things I want to keep to upgrade in order to see what else that triggers. Spoke too soon. =-O Synaptic decided to be weird and not show me stuff. I had just upgraded stuff and had not yet closed Synaptic afterward, something that was upgraded must have affected the running synaptic, which I have not had happen very often, but it's not the first time. After closing and starting it again there are still some things I can't upgrade/remove One KDE4 packages depends on libgpgme++2, if I were to remove the dependant package that would cause other KDE4 stuff to be removed. If I upgrade it, that would cause gimp to be removed. libilmbase6 and libopenexr6 are then listed as things that have pre-transition type names that would be removed with post-transition names that would be installed. Opencv is also in the list of things it would cause to be upgraded which can't be upgraded without causing something else to be removed. For me the list *is* getting small now. :-) Later, Seeker

Apt-get isn't as aggressive in removing packages so I still have libreoffice which aptitude wanted to remove. Don't know if it's fully working, but it at least starts. The problem is reportedly switching to gcc5. It breaks a lot of fundamental libraries. Unfortunately the Debian procedure for moving stuff from sid to "testing" wasn't really designed to handle low-level breakages. So far I'm keeping productive using xfce and also have a working gnome-flashback desktop. I look forward to getting kde back sometime in the near future.
