#241641 — Choqok 1.7

SubjectChoqok 1.7

How do I get Choqok Version 1.7.0 04-Feb-2020 which contains this
important change: Twitter: update char limit to 280?

The source code is on github but I did not succeed in compiling it. The
install button here doesn't work: https://apps.kde.org/choqok/

I am using Debian 10.

Well, the easiest course of action would probably be to upgrade to
Debian 11, the current stable release. It has choqok version 1.7.0.

I am compiling from source now, after installing many many dev packages.

Hi Richmond,

Goodness, why? Upgrading to Debian 11 is mentioned in this list fairly often
and is probably more straightforward than building random code from github.
 or from source yourself.

If packagers are prepared to update and maintain packages for you that work
with the current Debian stable, consider using them.

Building random code from random places on the Internet for fun is fine the
first few times but may not always work and may cause further problems you
then need to solve.. Above all, the advice at
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian remains very relevant.

Any of;
 Temporarily add bullseye repo and install choqok 1.7.0
or
 Upgrade you whole Debian install to 11 - Bullseye
or
 d/l the 1.7.0 package from a Debian repo and install with dpkg

Be advised;
Choqok 1.7.0 may have dependencies that cannot be properly satisfied in
Debian 10, so anything other than 'upgrade to 11' may result in system
breakage. In which case you, the lucky user, get to keep all the parts.

Yes downloading the deb package failed with a dependency.

Compiling from source failed with:

behaviorconfig.cpp:97:36: error: ‘markAsChanged’ is not a member of ‘BehaviorConfig’

But upgrading to 11 is further than I am prepared to go at the moment.

Hello,

As you noticed, Chokoq 1.7.0 is available as a binary to install from
upstream by clicking the button "install on linux". (1)
But it is mentioned that the button works only with Appstream
application stores. (2)

To install 1.7.0:

- Start by uninstalling Chokoq 1.6.2 (if do no not do so, you risk
problems with concurrent versions 1.6.2 and 1.7.0).

- Install an application store like plasma-discover for KDE or Gnome-
Software for Gnome (perhaps some CLI programs like appstream would do
also).
- Once the app store is installed, click the Chokoq "install on linux"
button on the web page, you will be prompted to open it with the
installed app store. Or you can directly search Chokoq in the app store
to install it.

(I use Gnome, Gnome-Software is installed: when I click on "install on
linux", I am asked if I want to open Gnome-Software. If I open it, I
can search for Chokoq and 1.7.0 is available to install from the store)

As a side note, if you want to retain a certain level of security, you
will need to upgrade to Debian 11 Bullseye before July 2022 or June
2024, depending on the full or reduced scope of the support you can
cope with (3)

I still believe it would be simpler to upgrade to Debian 11. It's
something that the OP would need to do eventually anyway.

It might be simpler to do it, unless there are some unforseen
consequences. I don't have a way to do a backup currently. I have done
some naughty things like installing zoom.

Also I prefer to have all my computers on the same version of debian if
I can, but one has an nvidia card and the drivers don't support the
version 5 kernel.

Before the upgrade, comment out the sources.list line for Zoom - optionally,
remove it altogether. Upgrade to Debian 11 then redownload / reenable Zoom.
[It's not "naughty" - Debian supports the right of users to use non-free
software, just doesn't package it in main].

Which model? You may find that nouveau will support the card adequately.

At least all official Zoom deb pacakages released since one year are
compatible with Debian 11.

This is very interesting. I didn't know about this, although I knew
about app images. I am using the mate desktop but I was still able to
install gnome-software.

I did this.

Installed gnome-software.

It failed here saying that it was not compatible. Also searching for
choqok in gnome-software didn't find it.

Does it bring its own libraries with it? Maybe it requres something from
debian 11?

Hello,

(Bullseye here)

1) I have not been able to install an appstream version Choqok via
Gnome-Software (it complains about the item type being not managed) nor
Plasma-Discover (it complains about a missing appstream transport
protocol for apt)

2) I have been able to install an appstream version of choqok by using
the CLI command appstreamcli in a terminal:
verify that the appstream package is installed (if Gnome-Software is
installed, appstream is installed as a dependency)

verify the status of appstream:
 didier@hp-notebook14:~$ appstreamcli status
will inform you if the cache has been populated (if not, an
'appstreamcli refresh' command would probably do the trick)

search appstream info for choqok:
 didier@hp-notebook14:~$ appstreamcli s choqok
Identificateur: org.kde.choqok.desktop [desktop-application]
Nom: Choqok
Résumé: Client de microblogage
Paquet: choqok
Page d’accueil: https://choqok.kde.org/
Icône: choqok_choqok.png

install Choqok (I do not know well appstream operations, the get
operation is probably not needed)
 didier@hp-notebook14:~$ appstreamcli get org.kde.choqok.desktop
Identificateur: org.kde.choqok.desktop [desktop-application]

done :-)

The search operation of Appstream is probably searching only the local
appstream database

Yesterday evening I tried different things with Gnome-Software (try to
add kde appstream as a repo, etc...) and Plasma-Discover. So Perhaps it
has somehow inserted choqok metadata into the locala appstream
database. That could explain why my appstream search is positive while
yours is negative.

Anyway, try:
$ sudo appstreamcli refresh
$ appstreamcli s choqok --details
$ appstreamcli get org.kde.choqok.desktop
$ sudo appstreamcli install org.kde.choqok.desktop
$ appstreamcli s choqok --details

and let us know the result

If it does not work, sorry I have no more ideas, you would then be left
to search a substitute of Choqok in the Debian Buster repos with
equivalent features and your desired Twitter functionnalities, or
upgrade to Bullseye.

I have just one other thing to try before I give up and that is to try a
different compiler, or different version of gcc, on the source. I could
maybe try to contact the developers.
