I used an ordinary netinstall image, not described as 'minimal'. Xfce
was certainly listed among the desktop environments, and it installed
without problems on a very old laptop.

But all the netinstalls pull most of their software from the Net, as
the name implies. 'Support' for a desktop in a netinstall is no more
than an entry in a text list. Even without that, a console-only
installation can be made and Xfce and supporting graphics can be
installed normally, though not as conveniently.

I will soon be installing unstable starting from a console-only
bullseye, upgrading at that point and only then loading what I want,
including GUI and Xfce.

The mini.iso can be used to install unstable directly.

I have used this technique many times over ethernet. It deserves to be
more widely known.

Meybe the mini.iso deserves a dedicated page in the Wiki or something.

It's the only image I know of that can:

 * install unstable directly

 * install to the same storage device it is (was) on

(very convenient for installs on brand new systems or USB storage)

As mentioned in another thread, it also provides a partition to copy any
necessary firmware[1], so it should cover just about every installation
need provided the network interface is supported.

Did I mention the size is just 48 Mib (74 if you want a graphical
install) for bullseye, amd64?

[1] the big .tar.gz or just individual packages if you know exactly
which ones you need.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Maybe. Something to think about.

The mini.iso is the responsibility of the d-i team, not the images
team. Discussion or issues with it should go to debian-boot rather
than debian-cd.

One thing to be aware of is that, after a network connection is set
up, everything else is downloaded from the network. This includes
parts of the installer itself. Should a new version of the installer
be released, the image will break.

A second issue is if the kernel and its modules in the archive are
updated. The image is tied to the versions of the kernel and modules
that it was built with and will not match what is in the archive.
Breakage again.

The recommended way to avoid any issue is to use a daily image:

The stable image should be fine most of the time.

Even if the kernels are regularly updated, this is done via the
-security archive, as far as I know the kernel in the "regular" archive
is updated only at point releases.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Hi Sriram,

There's no specific support for any desktop in the netinst size file.
As mentioned in one of the other replies to this thread - it's too big
for a CD now and, given the usage of these and the effort of producing
and testing images the media release team have cut down on the number of
discrete images produced for Bullseye [Debian 11] and going forward.

You can grab a netinst and isntall any desktop you want. You can grab a DVD
size image and should be able to install xfce without any further network
access. If a DVD image is too big to download in and of itself, there are
tools like jigdo which will allow you to build the media images from
individual packages - but require some network access.

If your network aaccess is severely limited, you may need to think carefully
about how you use Debian - security updates come out regularly, for example.

All the very best, as ever,

Andy Cater

[Who is also part of the media team for release testing]

Hi,

Jigdo does not support the composition of new images.
The .template file inflates to the size of the ISO image for which it
was produced. This inflated file contains holes into which jigdo-lite
inserts .deb packages which it downloads according to the .jigdo file.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Another idea to get a smaller XFCE capable image:

One could use the "modifying" use case of xorriso to strip down a
DVD sized image by removing packages which will surely not be needed.

  xorriso -indev debian-11.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso \
          -outdev my_new_debian_11.iso \
          -rm ...paths.in.the.ISO... -- \
          -boot_image any replay

(Note that this time it is "replay" not "keep" with the -boot_image
command. "keep" works only with multi-session, which always enlarges ISOs
even if files get removed/hidden.)

Above method would avoid the need to download dozens of .deb files which
are needed for XFCE. But it imposes the need to download a whole DVD sized
image.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

No, but it does allow you to get a DVD sized image over a number
of days or a much longer period by connecting as/when you can or taking
the opportunity of a higher bandwidth connection somewhere as and
when available.

I have good internet bandwidth here so not a problem - but the fact that
jigdo is restartable at any point is a plus if you're obliged to use it.

All best,

Andy C.
