Sometimes for people without the bandwidth, sometimes because they forward part of their proceeds to SPI or something (if I wanted to do that I'd be forced to wrestle with some international bank bureaucracy I better don't describe here). I've chosen to pay for "something which is free", often for the second reason, thus helping make it possible for you to download things for free.
