Changes for debhelper-compat 12 have already been committed: https://salsa.debian.org/debian/ddclient/-/blob/c85aa96a6b51386e2f7994fc1ad7ae60f9cda098/debian/control#L5 but I'm waiting for a sponsor to upload: https://bugs.debian.org/962159

Hmm, I uploaded the build on wednesday. dput did not complain but I still can't see the package in Debian. I actually spent quite a while fighting with pbuilder because I wanted to include the changelog of all versions that we did not upload to the archive (so that the closes: #... entries in changelog are applied). Looks like you figured it out. Thanks for uploading! For any lurkers out there curious about the solution, you can pass -v<version> to dpkg-genchanges to get it to show more than just the latest entry: gbp buildpackage -v3.8.3-1.1
