In seinem Erinnerungsbuch (Berlin 1989) memoriert Strauß die drei Möglichkeiten, von denen er 1961 (»basierend auf Berichten der eigenen und der alliierten Dienste«) ausgehen konnte: Erstens die »totale Blockade« von Westberlin - das »wäre der schlimmste Fall gewesen«, für den die NATO-Führung militärische Reaktionen plante, bis hin »zu dem abenteuerlichen Vorschlag von amerikanischer Seite«, »eine Atombombe zu werfen und zwar im Gebiet der DDR«! Bezüglich des Atombombenzieles wurde Strauß konsultiert und nannte einen ihm bekannten sowjetischen Truppenübungsplatz in der DDR. Strauß dazu im Rückblick: »Solche Überlegungen sind am Sonntag, dem 13. August 1961, zum Glück Makulatur geworden.« " Da wurde ein Mäuerchen gebaut, danket allen dafür. BU
