DOSBox-X emulates a PC necessary for running many DOS games and applications
that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, similar to
DOSBox. However, while the main focus of DOSBox is for running DOS games,
DOSBox-X goes much further than this. Started as a fork of the DOSBox project,
it retains compatibility with the wide base of DOS games and DOS gaming DOSBox
was designed for. But it is also a platform for running DOS applications,
including emulating the environments to run Windows 3.x, 9x and ME and software
written for those versions of Windows. By adding official support for Windows
95, 98, and ME emulation and acceleration, we hope that those old Windows games
and applications could be enjoyed or used once more. Moreover, DOSBox-X adds
support for NEC PC-98 emulations so that you can play PC-98 games with it.

Our goal is to eventually make DOSBox-X a complete DOS emulation package that
is both fully-featured and easy to use. We implement new features with each
official release, and also try our best to deliver a consistent cross-platform
experience for users. In order to help improve the general DOS emulation and
also to aid retro-development, it is our desire to maintain and implement more
accurate emulation, but at the same time we are also making efforts to improve
emulation quality, speed, and usability for end users. DOSBox-X features a
flexible configuration, as we believe a better way to emulate the DOS platform
is to give users all the options to configure the DOS virtual machine. We hope
to improve the out-of-the-box experience for new users who want to run DOS
programs or games, as well as implementing emulation that is accurate enough to
make retro-programming possible with confidence the program will run properly
on actual hardware.

Besides Windows, Linux and macOS packages, there are also packages released for
the DOS operating system. Yes, DOSBox-X can officially run on DOS systems as
well, as some DOS users seem to prefer to run DOS applications and games
through a DOS emulator. With DOSBox-X running in DOS you are able to emulate
another DOS system with a different PC configuration (such as different machine
types, video and sound cards etc) that works better for the purpose of the
users. But please note that due to the limitations of this environment not all
features of DOSBox-X that are available in other platforms can be supported in
the DOS version.

For the current DOSBox-X version 0.83.9, the official DOS version is available
in the following zip package:

dosbox-x-mingw-hx-dos-20210102130253.zip
The DOS package allows you to run DOSBox-X in a real DOS system (MS-DOS 5.0+ or
compatible) with the help of the freely-available HX DOS Extender, which is
already included in the recent DOS release packages. Once you unzip the package
you can directly type DOSBOX-X to run in DOS. See the README.TXT file inside
the DOS package for more information.

Alternatively, you can run DOSBox-X from a DOS environment with the help of the
free LOADLIN program. The alternative DOS package for DOSBox-X 0.83.9 using
this approach is available from:

dosbox-x-dos-0.83.9-loadlin.zip
With this alternative DOS package you can even run DOSBox-X right from
DOSBox-X's DOS shell. Start the outside DOSBox-X with the setting memsize=127
and cputype=pentium (perhaps also fullscreen=true). Go to the directory where
the files are extracted and type DOSBOX-X. Then just wait for DOSBox-X to be
automatically loaded within DOSBox-X.

Note: You may not see DOS packages for some DOSBox-X versions. For example, the
official DOS package is not available for DOSBox-X version 0.83.1.

Поддерживаю.  Hедавно мы добавили в него чёткое попиксельное
масштабирование -- pixel-perfect  scaling -- простейший   по
сути  алгоритм,  который должен был быть в родном DOXBox-е с
самого начала: отображение каждого  эмулируемого  пиксела  в
виде  прямоугольника  m x n физических пикселов, где m:n ап-
проксимируют пропорции эмулирумого пиксела. Для многих  игр,
в режиме 320x200 пропорции пиксела 5:6,  и только для порти-
рованныйх с Амиги (Lure of the Temptress) они 1:1. Для  пра-
вильной  работы необходимо включить DPI Awareness, что ОС не
вмешивалась в процесс вывода эмулируемого дисплея на физиче-
ский.

Я  имел в виду настройку `dpi aware' в конфиге DOSBox-а. Hа-
звать настройку с пробелом придумал не я :-(

Сколько я не мучился с DOSbox и прочей ерундой, но нормально получилось только
после покупки на Avito компа на Pentium III )))

Hello, Alexander!

Ну там не то чтоб совсем нормальный DOS, поставил freeDOS, но в целом - да,
что-то я соскучился по тексту. Единственный его минус - нет torrent-клиента, а
в остальном вполне прикольная тема.

Интеpесно, как сейчас пеpвопни живут, у котоpых батаpейка на матеpи была в виде
коpпуса микpухи? У меня и в 2003 такой pаботал хpеново.
