So kaufe ich privat immer noch Mainboards - immer mit dem Maximum, was mit verfügbaren Speichermodulen an RAM auf das Board passt. So hat mein aktueller PC 128 GB RAM bekommen ;-). Brauche ich das vollumfänglich? Nein, aktuell nicht wirklich. Jetzt steht hier so einer: Dual Opteron, jeweils 12 Kernchen mit 2,4GHz und nette 128GB RAM. Dazu eine SAS-RAID-Karte, die ich aber erstmal weggelegt habe. Grafikkarte rein (das onboard-VGA ist doch etwas dröge) und die Kiste flutscht super. Wieso wirft man so etwas weg? mfg Markus

Im Bestand war auch noch eine nVidia 8800GTX, allerxdings habe ich noch nicht rausbekommen, wieviel VRAM die hat. Gibt es Programme, die den Kasten mal auslasten können? :D Die Datenblätter der SAS-Backplanes habe ich inzwischen, die Einschübe fehlen leider. Langsamere und damit leisere Lüfter sollte er abkönnen. Edit: Eine PCIe-Karte für eine M.2-SSD lag auch noch rum, die hatte auch noch Platz. Mal gucken, ob er davon auch booten kann. mfg Markus

Weil Opteron im Vergleich zu aktuellen CPUs nicht nicht mehr wirklich schnell ist. Das ist eine gut 13 Jahre alte Architektur, wobei die ersten Opteron-Modelle bereits 2003 vorgestellt wurden, also schon vor über 20(!) Jahren. Das gibt es immer noch und wird auch viel verwendet: Vom Remote Desktop
fürs Home Office über Server-Administration bis zu fetten
Multi-User-Servern. Basiert alles auf der gleichen Technologie. Selbst
WLAN-Beamer damit habe ich schon gesehen.

Das war erst mit PS/2 also 1987. Der IBM PC wurde im Herbst 1980
vorgestellt ("Project CHESS").

Immerhin machen sie fast ununterbrochen Gewinne. Und den CIOs von Banken
und Versicherungen, von Nachrichtendiensten und Regierungen brauchst Du
nicht mit PC-Netzwerke zu kommen. Der Backbone ist immer ein Mainframe.

Ich hatte OS/2 und später auch IBM C++. Deren Entwicklungsmethode schien mir zu sein, erst des Programm komplett auf Papier zu entwickeln und dann abtippen ( zu lassen). Wenn ich in deren von GUI erzeugte sourcen eigenen Text ein tipppte und dann die GUI änderte, war mein Text weg. Wie gut Emulator Herkules für IBM Maschinen war, weiss ich nicht. Als ich mich mal für eine IBM Kugelkopfmaschine interessierte, wurde ich an einen Vertreter verwiesen. Siemens hat bezüglich mainframe Betriebssysteme Privatanwender praktisch ausgesperrt. Den EDOR hätte ich manchmal gerne gehabt. Und software, an deren Entwicklung ich beteiligt war, hätte ich eventuell auch noch gerne gehabt. Mich würde z.B. interessieren, wie lange eine Übersetzung mit einem Emulator auf meinen PC dauert, die früher auf einer mainframe ca 2 Stunden brauchte. Mein software Basteltrieb ist noch vorhanden. Allerdings .. Damals musste man noch Plattenplatz beantragen.. Siemens hat beim ECB85 ( 8 Bit Rechner mit 8085 CPU ) ein interssantes System gehabt. Insbesondere die code Verschiebung mit Anpassung absoluter Adressen war nützlich. Ich hatte später für längere Zeit eine ausrangierte MX2. ( Betriebssystem Sinix ( Unix an Siemens angepasst ) 16 Bit CPU NS32016 oder so etwa Programmiersprache K&R C ( kein Ansi) Editor Maxed. ) Wegen proprietärer IO konnte ich das System nicht mit meinen computer verbinden. -- <http://www.hermann-riemann.de>
