I tried Eightyone 1.0a on a laptop with 100 MHz Pentium and 24 MB RAM
and Windows 95C (OSR2.5) updated with IE5.5 but it didn't start. Is
there a version that would work on this laptop? Is there another
emulator that works in Windows 95?

I'd imagine you are looking at older emulators, maybe those that ran in Dos.

Fuse probably works too:
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/fuse-emulator/files/fuse/1.0.0.1/fuse-1.0.0.1-win32.zip/download>

Thanks for all answers. Unfortunately my Windows 95 laptop broke
yesterday. It complained about non system disk and it came smoke out of
it when I was booting and then it stopped. It still works because I can
start with only batteries if I boot from a diskette -- but now I can't
charge the batteries. It seems the HDD has broken and then caused
problems for the internal power supply. Maybe a capacitor exploded. I
think it might have been a bit cold when I started it. Unfortunately one
needs a special screwdriver or bits in order to open it. It's a Compaq
LTE 5051. I have an IDE to USB adapter and has tried to read the HDD w/o
success.

I bought the laptop really cheap (79 SEK or 8 Euro) on Ebay (actually
Swedish Tradera.com) and wanted to use it to demonstrate that a cheap
old laptop could be useful and fun.

I think your demonstration failed!

"There's nothing like eating hay when you're faint," the White King remarked to Alice, as he munched away.
"I should think throwing cold water over you would be better," Alice suggested: "--or some sal-volatile."
"I didn't say there was nothing better," the King replied. "I said there was nothing like it."
Which Alice did not venture to deny.
