where can I find a description of the .p file format used by the emulators?

"p" is not really a good keyword for Google :-(

Hi,

The "P" file is not really a format !
It's the ZX81 memory dump, without any file tag.

It include:
- The Zx81 Basic system mémory.
- The Basic programme memory.
- The D_file (video memory).
- The Vars (Basic Variables memory : A$, num...)
You had to rebuild the Zx81 memory to create a "P" file.
... or get a "P" martice file and change somes values.
-> Vb81 Xur resources ?

Surely it's simply whatever the ZX81 writes when you type SAVE?  This
may or may not be the same as a complete memory dump.

In fact, there's two "p" release !
The real binary dump using a "SAVE" command, on the ZX81. (from a Wav file)
filenamE + binary dump
And a second release whitout name ... (from Xtender emulator)
The name is include in the printer buffer.

Ok, that one seems to be more common. I have a i8251 UART at "my 
similar-to-Wilf's-ZX97" machine and wrote a routine that allows me to 
shoot a .p file into the ZX at 9k6. The first byte is stored at 4009h 
and then bytes are receved until the value given in 4014.15h is reached 
or break is pressed. Works fine!

How do I have to set NXTLIN to get rid of the autostart? To DFILE-1?

The NXTLIN is used in the Basic Monitor (ROM) and is set to the Next Basic 
address line.
This pointer is a 16bits value.
You had to retrive the right address line in the Basic chained lines.
Not easy to retrive the Basic line offset in the memory, but try to launch 
your "p" file on the first line ! (the first REM... like a Run command)
The D_file adresse is the summ of all of memory Basic parts... (after Basic 
lines)
>> Basic memory + &76 + &76 + 32xcharacters+&76 (RETURN)+ (...)
The Vars can be empty.

This is the value where it is set now. Therefore the program is executed 
immediately after loading. Now I would like to patch the .p file to 
prevent this autostart, so that I can save my file to RAMdisk before it 
is run the first time.

Which line is addressed when the progam is NOT running? Do I have to set 
it after the last line (i.e. start of the variable area resp. DFILE-1 
when no vars are present), or is there a special value for "number 
invalid -- we are in edit mode"?

This translates into

	call FAST
	setb 7, D
	jp NEXT_PROG

NEXT_PROG is where we end up after the load command, and bit 7 of D is 
usually the Carry flag returned by the NAME (03A8h) routine.

But when does NAME set the Carry (which is what we are faking here)?

The ZX-Team "USB File Manager" code contains a function to disable the 
Autostart

You have to set NXTLIN = DFILE.
