Since this news doesn't seem to have reached c.s.s. Mike Singleton,
creator of Lords of Midnight (which I've just been playing for the
first time and live tweeting along much to the annoyance of probably
all my followers) passed away last week.

Nice article here:

Mike Singleton was the creator of "Interstellar Intrigue", the best
type-in program I ever saw.

I never got my teeth fully into Mike's games - though they were
obviously gargantuan in their scope and ambition.
Still remember reading a short interview with him in C&VG magazine.
He said his goal in life was to create a classic game - the computer
equivalent of Chess - that would be played by people long after he
was dead and buried. Not sure if he got his wish, though a statement
like that proves he was the game designer of game's designers.

Absolutely. "Lords" wasn't really my cup of tea either back in the day,
but having played it more recently, I was hugely impressed by the size
of the world he created and the depth of its gameplay. He knew, and
deeply cared about, what he was doing. In my book there's no higher
praise than that.

No doubt he put as much care and effort into the last game he worked
on - Race Driver: Grid - but I can't help feeling it was a bit of a
comedown from the days of Beyond. A strategy game using Bethesda's
Skyrim engine would have been more his style.

A sad loss. And only 61, too.

He was working on an iOS re-make right up to his death, which his
collaborator, after some consideration, now hopes to continue in a
slightly different form:

So I guess he'll get his wish to some degree.

Sad loss, always amazed me how much 'world' he could pack into such a small
amount of space. Never compleated any of his games but I had a good go. An
amazing guy.
