Dear crap game designers, fellow newsgroup people, This year, the task of hosting the compo given to me by Nathan and the judge. So I'm announcing the official opening of Crap Game Competition 2012. I hope we can all have fun together, as in older compos. I've created a site to host the games and reviews. I coded it today from scratch, and I'm sure it's buggy (I didn't test it enough), please do not hack it :) I'll keep adding features if I find enough time. The official website is http://cgc.zx.gen.tr You can submit and publish your game automatically on website, or if you are lazy, you can e-mail it to me directly. Submission email address is cgc@zx.gen.tr (please allow me some time to process the entry). This year is zx spectrum's 30th year. Because of this, I added a sub- compo named "30 Year Award". For this compo, deadline is 23.April. 2012. It's not a different compo than cgc, think as it's a half-way award. Ofcourse all entries are also eligible for main compo, even if they won "30 year award". This year I'm using a kind of voting system, users asked to pick their favourites in 4 different subject: A poop, a heart, a brain and a sqij. Even though you don't make a game, please visit the site and pick your winners. You can change your favourites until compo deadline (which is 01.01.2013, 00:01). As you know, I'm not a regular here, but I'm subscribed to this group for more than 2 years, reading it silently. Still, If you need a very fast answer you better use the cgc2012 thread on wos forums. I'm already nervous posting my first newsgroup message since 8 years. Thank you for reading, and have fun designing your game! Arda (ref)

The thing is, though I can no longer play games, the real fun time was when thee Spectrum was still mainstream, and yet some game writers thought they were producing good software, but it was in fact crap in some way. So what was the worst non intentionally crap game in the 80s and early 90s? I'm not talking about bugs, though a bug that stopped one completing a game would qualify I think. Brian -- Brian Gaff....Note, this account does not accept Bcc: email. graphics are great, but the blind can't hear them Email: briang1@blueyonder.co.uk ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "Chris Young" <chris.usenet@mail-filter.com> wrote in message news:4F1C8E46.MD-1.4.17.chris.young@unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk... > On Sun, 22 Jan 2012 14:13:35 -0800 (PST) da kidz on comp.sys.sinclair were > rappin' > to MC arda: > >> Dear crap game designers, fellow newsgroup people, > > I've updated the Crap Game finder website. If you don't want to, crap games are not for playing. it's a big accomplishment if you can keep playing any of them. If you don't have time, playing a crap game only takes 10 secons from your time. >some game writers thought they > were producing good software, but it was in fact crap in some way. yes, this sums it up. It's a flat text file CSV style. If you look at http://www.yoursinclair.co.uk/csscgc/csscgc.txt.gz the format should be pretty obvious. The csscgc 2010 games are also available in xml format here: http://csscgc2010.zxlife.net/Games.xml Binaries are located by prepending 'http://csscgc2010.zxlife.net/Games/' to the front of the <file file='...'> elements.

If you don't have > time, playing a crap game only takes 10 secons from your time. I need approx. 15min for a cgcgame, maybe down to 5min. 10sec isn't enough for the first loading parts before the data loading part :). Some of the cgcgames may take more than 15min... That all you can do with either an old PC (100MHz), or AMIGA and ST/TT, or a new energy-saving iAtom micro-ATX and similars, and a real Speccy (for MC-data contributions by e.g. Mathew Wescott) for audible data-loading by the soundcard, for cgcgames not running on emulators. -- Daniel Mandic

"Sqij!" by The Power House seems to be more or less uncontested for that title. It manages to be crap on so many different levels that it's actually quite profound: * The graphics are hideously bad. To be fair, this is possibly justified by the storyline, where you play a mutant bird in a post-apocalyptic setting, and maybe mutant birds are meant to look like they've been cut out of polystyrene with a butter knife, and their enemies are supposed to look like cubist pigs. * The loader enables caps lock, but the game doesn't respond to capitalised keypresses, so you can't control your character at all unless you break into the program (it's in Basic, natch) and turn caps lock off again. * Even then, it's pretty much impossible to control because your character tends to reverse direction at random. * But your score continuously increases anyway. * When it does move in vaguely the right direction, it moves at about three pixels a second, because your sprite is so freaking huge and the game is written in Basic. * And leaves a trail of stray pixels behind. * The enemies are implemented not as regular sprites, but portions of the screen that scroll up and down, which means that if you stick your head in their path, your head starts scrolling up and down with them. * Wait... scrolling, in Basic? Oh yes, it's actually using Ocean's Laser Basic add-on. But it doesn't use the Laser Basic compiler like you're supposed to, so the game actually includes a pirate copy of the Laser Basic runtime. * If you manage to get out of the first room without dying (and being greeted by the friendly message "WHAT A PLONKER.YOU'VE JUST GOT YOURSELF KILLED"), and then go back in again, it loses track of the enemy positions, which means they start wrapping around the top and bottom of the screen, and the collision detection happens in the wrong place. * The Power House went on to demonstrate even more disdain for their customers by re-releasing it, in the same broken state, as part of a compilation.

So you're saying Angry Birds is a rip off of sqij!? On 23/01/2012 21:51, Matthew Westcott wrote: > * The graphics are hideously bad. Sqij is definitely the winner (or loser, depending on how you look at
it). Back when I hosted the CGC in 2007 (blimey, was it that long
ago?) I took at look at the bottom five rated games on WOS. At the
time, the list was:
5. Butterfly
4. Voyage Into The Unknown
3. Boat Run
2. Sqij
1. Uchi Mata
(for anybody who missed this the first time round, see
http://www.unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk/?pg=procrap - I've also copied
my reviews onto WOS, so you can now find them there too)
Despite being "only" at number 2, Sqij was clearly the worst one
there. However, the one I most enjoyed was Voyage Into The Unknown.
As my mini review stated, Novotron 8 - an actual CSSCGC entry - is
pretty much exactly the same game (but better!). It's certainly worth
a look.
I just checked out the current list, and Voyage has slipped to #10,
with Sqij down to #5. I'm not sure what the others in the top 5 are,
except Boat Run ("It's a bit like the Project X bonus game that did
the rounds on the Amiga, except it is much slower, blockier, jerkier
and the entire game has a maximum score of just 111."):
1. Laser Lord
2. Cage Match
3. Thermo-Nuclear War
4. Boat Run
5. SQIJ!
The top (bottom) three all look awful, but are they really worse than
Sqij and Boat Run?!
Chris

Has anyone ever played Spectrum Safari? That ranks quite highly in the world of crapness. I got it for like fifty pence or something at a car boot sale in my first flush of Speccy owning youth, and was amazed at how bad it is (especially the Kicking Sheep). Now I've just acquired a +2 for the first time in years, I think I'll have to load that one up again, and laugh at how awesomely bad it was. Lee

After a whole silent month, another entry has arrived thanks to AY Chip: Conway's Soldiers is added to the cgc2012 web site. http://cgc.zx.gen.tr/index.php?game=0221093511 it has 5th row to try and play indefinitely, so start working now!
