#9490 — Hdmi sound on Pi 2B

SubjectHdmi sound on Pi 2B
Message-ID<c5cdd1f754.Broadband@tmsmith36.plus.com>
I set up my other pi b+ to play through my monitor speakers using a
hdmi cable some time ago and it works ,no problem.
Attempting to set up my new Pi2 B in the same way has outwitted me!!
If I set Sonic Pi to headphones I can hear the note on the headphones.
If I alter the setting to hdmi I get nothing which suggests an
incorrect setting further back in the chain.
However in raspi-config I have set hdmi as well as in /boot/config.txt
where I have set hmdi_drive=2.

Any suggestions anyone

Is this typo in the config file as well?

No , just finger trouble.
The line is aleady in the file , just needs the hash sign removing

If I plug in the headphones on selecting headphones in Sonic I
immediately get the background 'hiss' and notes will play.
If I select hdmi or default the hiss goes away but no notes are heard
ove the Tv speakers. Just plugging in the older Pi with same software
settings the notes play.

Are different settings required for Pi2 ?

Do you have

hdmi_force_hotplug=1

in /boot/config.txt?

Yes I did try that without effect.
Tried again, same result

Here is my /boot/config.txt file.

# For more options and information see

# Some settings may impact device functionality. See link above for
details

# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels
visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if
console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's
size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being
output
hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio
work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference,
blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.

That's what my config.txt looks like (except that I do specify the HMDI group and mode to get 1680x1050) and sound now seems to work better on the Pi2 than it did on the Pi, when I had to (for example) specify HDMI audio output in omxplayer to get sound on TV speakers.

I don't use Sonic Pi, but omxplayer and desktop media players (VLC etc) seem fine. The OS is Raspbian/jessie.

HTH,
Andrew

Thanks for that Andrew. I will try omxplayer and see if that succeeds.

You may want to run a mixer and see if your sound has been
muted. Occasionally I find my non-pi Debian install has muted itself,
or maybe I did it and didn't realize what had happened.

And yes, you can set different devices to different settings.

Thanks for that, I willlook into it.
I have still had no success otherwise
