By the time carriage, VAT, duty, & handling were added, two $80 items
from LA cost me £160.

Mustn't also forget the handling charge for the carrier collecting the
VAT and/or duty. This varies from nothing, to £6, or even £13 IME with
different carriers.

Sometimes we hope that goods sent to us are (mis-)declared as a gift
(2.4) but be aware that the lies sellers put on customs declarations are
the responsibility of the consignee.
