Apple itself doesn't carry a much inventory and when they know they're going to be releasing new models soon, they stop production, with delays indicated on the Apple Store website ordering system by the shipping times. Resellers may well have a few out-going models in stock, but apart from the big names, they can't afford to have large piles of equipment either. Being smaller and to some degree cheaper, resellers can have more stock of iOS devices than Mac computers. There are also many more iOS device resellers which do not sell Mac computers at all. Many, but not all, of those are also 'refurbished' models (some traded-in by the previous owner when they upgraded).

The big boys like Microsoft and Adobe will create Apple Silicon versions of their apps. The Intel-Apple Silicon universal binaries will help out in the short term (in fact it's apparently even poosible to create a universal binaries app which contains code for PowerPC, Intel, and Apple Silicon). Apple has also just released tools for programmers using Windows boxes to create Mac apps with the Metal graphics framework.

If you recall when Autodesk announced that they would no longer release new versions of Autocad for the Mac it generated a lot of protests and they backed down. But the Mac version of Autocad is less fully featured than the Windows version <https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Compare-Features-AutoCAD-for-Windows-vs-AutoCAD-for-Mac.html>. For Microsoft Office, it should run fine under virtualization and emulation, it's that high-resource applications that are the real issue. One of the big selling points of the Mac has been that it can run both Windows and OS-X applications so you get the best of both worlds (Linux as well).

Rubbish. The Mac has been able to run both Windows and Mac apps long before MacOS X even existed. Using Intel chips makes the process somewhat easier and faster, but it remains to be seen how good the Apple Silicon computers run and how well Parallels and VMWare can get emulation running on them. Plus there is already an ARM version fo Windows which could possibly run natively on Apple Silicon Macs (albeit that ARM Windows is reportedly crappy). Then of course there's the fact that the vast majority of Mac users do not need nor want Windows anyway ... they're using Macs to *escape* that hell hole!

I know that at run time, a program can get the CPU model and branch diferently based on CPU model. But how does the source come invoke that assembler instruction if it is available? Or is this one level detached where applications just calls a systej service and that service has parts written in seembler which will invoke the instructiuon if present or run its own code if not? Just curious how various apps that have taken advantage of special features of chips are built corss-platform and to run on different chips within one platform. The graphics area is likely going to be the big hurdle. Whereas in the past, people use OpenGL on all plaftforms, now it is CUDA on NVIDIA/Windows, or Metal on AMD graphics cards on Macs and iPhones with built-in in Apple GPU. With apple annoucing the OpenGL is to be deprecated eventually (it will still be supported on early ARM based Macs), this means that programming for Mac vs Windows and Android vs IOS will become quite different for games.

Linux has far fewer users than Macs do. Any programmer moving to Linux instaed would be a braindead idiot, or simply doesn't care about selling anything.
