As predicted, no new hardware announcements, just tweaks to the various OSes, mainly useless garbage like "Desktop Stacks" and trying to rework Quick Look into being a Preview replacement. :-\

I for one am very interested in *most* of what was offered in the OS changes. And what a boatload of eye-candy! I could care less about icons and animated icons and all that stuff, but I know that such frippery has legions of fans. I thought the group facetime stuff was very cool, and again think it will draw in plenty of users--the kind of people who love this sort of stuff. I have an iPhone as does my wife and all my friends; none of us use facetime to my knowledge. Still I wouldn't be shocked to find I'm using it in a few years. I wonder if the intent is to draw away users from the competition (android, others) with all these extraordinary bells and whistles. There are a *lot* of bells and whistles! Desktop stacks may well be garbage for "Your Name" and of little use to me, since I keep my desktop well organized. But it will be a *dramatic* way for my wife to understand her haphazard world, and for me to periodically sort it out for her. I look forward to using the "get info" left-side panel in the Finder windows.

Oops. I meant their new *right-side" panel in the Finder windows. > i'm looking forward to browser fingerprint spoofing & blocking like > button trackers, homekit support in macos, as much as 2x speed > improvements in ios 12 and automatic workout detection. > > no word yet on what the 32 bit 'compromises' are, but from what i've > heard so far, there is still a warning when launched and they still > run.

Right now there are too many "bugs are acceptable" people in this group and not enough people with enough understanding to help the people with bricked PCs. And what did Sigmond have to say about this miraculous, years long string of oddities? Most of the time he would try to push Steve Petruzzellis to believe they're real people who just happened to have a detailed understanding of the history of the group. All makes total sense, NOT! <giggle> Sigmond's posts are nothing but a valueless brain dump. Too much glue for you, gluehead. - My Snoring Solution!! You say "potahto" (eye-candy), I say "potayto" (pointless gimmickry). :-) > I could care less about icons and animated icons and all that stuff, > but I know that such frippery has legions of fans. Yeah, right. We know you'll be making a Memoji ;-) just like every other iOS user ... until they get bored of the gimmick after a few 'look at this new gimmick' uses and then never bother using it ever again, like the previous Animojis. > I thought the group facetime stuff was very cool, and again think it > will draw in plenty of users--the kind of people who love this sort of > stuff. Unless you use properly set-up tags (highly unlikely for those who are disorganised enough to litter their Desktop with files in the first place), the Desktop Stacks simply group together files of the same type, making it somewhat useless. You'd be better off at least making your own Desktop folders to store stuff in organised how you want ... or even better, put the files away in properly organised locations in the first place. The one person I help out who has an incredibly messy Desktop wouldn't know the difference between looking in the 'Photos' stack or the 'Documents' stack, so they'd still be trawling through all the stacks looking for the file they want. > I look forward to using the "get info" left-side panel in the Finder windows. I'm not sure you've got that correct. I haven't seen any mention of a Finder "get info" panel yet. There is a new info panel on the *right* side of the 'Gallery' view, but it only shows the meta data from media files (the video format, the photo dimensions, etc.), not the actual Finder info. Potentially that could eventually be expanded on to show info for other files types. Some people are all excited about the "new Gallery view" ... except it's already been there for many previous versions of macOS under the name "Cover Flow", and is rarely-to-never used by most people.

What got my attention (no particular order) -Conference calling on Facetime. -APFS will be good on Fusion and spinning hard drives (this appeared on the last slide on wall before end of keynote, I assume there will be a presentation on that) -No mention of 32 vs 64 bit. -No mention of Apple Pay progress. -First US based non-Apple Pay access to NFC will be student ID cards that can be loaded in Wallet and used to unlock doors at a handful of US universities. (Access to NFC was done in Japan for its trasit system some time ago). The IOS-coexietence was explained. The UI API from IOS is being ported as a long term project. It will translate native MAC UI (mouse , mouse clicks, scrolling) into IOS events. This is long term projects and Apple expects developpers to get a beta by next year. But already, some of the new apps on OS-X such as "News" are IOS apps ported from IOS to OS-X. This will require apps be recompiled. (so this is not an emulator). No mention of how App store will work on this. (aka: if you buy app on iPhone, will the x86/OS-X version (if available) automatically become avaialble to download on the Mac App store ? IOS gets performance upgrades which will benefit older phones a lot. Same batch of phones get IOS 12 that got 11. The OS-X change to white on dark is ironic. It was Apple which "forced" thr world to go black on white starting with the Lisa/Mac. And now they want to reverse this, but knowing Jony Ive, will likely be grey on grey. The new "gallery" view is intetesting in terms of being a possible low end replacement for Adobe Bridge (Ability to display Exif data on a right sidebar). The Mac App store gets a Jony Ive UI, no actual changes under the hood on how apps approved etc etc. Overall, nothing compelling. We'll have to see in individual sessions how much gets changed under the hood.

Oh almost forgot: AppleTV gets no improvement. Its terrible UI not getting a makeover. AppleTV 4K gets Dolby Atmos. Apple Watch gets Walkie Talkie functionality, biut not iPhones. This I find strange. You think it woudl have been integrated.

At the "State of the Platforms" presentation: High Sierra was last release to support 32bit without compromise Mojave is the last release to support 32bit at all. Quicktime framework gone. Java 1.6 Apple framework gone. Carbon HLTB gone. (the Java one is important because used by many older Adobe apps that don't use the Oracle Java one). For security: -user conset for data access -enhanced runtime -notarized apps App data to be protected: -Location -Contacts -Photos -Calendar -Reminders -Camera -Microphone. (does this mean file seection dialogue will no longer offer access to the photos library? Will apps that don't request access to photos have any file selction dialogue remove photos selection? Also "secured" -Mail database -Message history -Safari data -Time machine backups -iTunes device backups -Locations and routines -System cookies SIP protections will be available to apps. Notarized apps: extension of the Developper ID program. Block malware before it gets distributed If you doN't distribute app via App Store, you must still get app approved by Apple, where it gets "notarized" and you can then distribute the notarized app via your web site or disjkettes or whatever you use to distribute apps. Otherwise, Apple has the ability to block your app from running on an app by app basis. When you first laujch app, the user's system checks with Apple to ensure it is not a maliciosu app and that it was notarized. For Mojave, this isn't a hard requirement, but will be in a future version. (Notarized is current in beta) There is some truth to unification of OS-X and IOS. AppKit (native to Mac) and UIKit (native to IOS) both rely on: Media Core IS Core Services Over time those 3 services drifted apart on OS-X and IOS. Apple is now re-converging these 3 bases frameworks so they are identical on OS-X and IOS. Apple will really be pushing that drak mode. Comfirms there will get grey text on grey TRANSLUCENT background for sidebars. Some icons will not translate porperly and need to be redraw by app developpers.

Also: MacOS Mojave, IOS 12 and TVos 12 deprecate: OpenGL OpenGL/ES OpenCL APIs remain available for compatibility but will be removed some time in future (date for removal not announced).

Not gone in macOS 10.14, going next year in macOS 10.15 along with all other 32-bit frameworks. > (the Java one is important because used by many older Adobe apps that > don't use the Oracle Java one). There are workarounds to get most of the Adobe CS applications running without Java 1.6, e.g. see https://www.macstrategy.com/article.php?135 That won't help for the components of CS6 and earlier which are still 32-bit (e.g. Indesign all the way up to CS6). They will definitely not work in macOS 10.15. > For security: > -user conset for data access > -enhanced runtime > -notarized apps > > > App data to be protected: > -Location > -Contacts > -Photos > -Calendar > -Reminders > -Camera > -Microphone. > > (does this mean file seection dialogue will no longer offer access to > the photos library? Will apps that don't request access to photos have > any file selction dialogue remove photos selection? Apps already shouldn't be directly accessing the Photos library. The Edit With feature in Photos for High Sierra provides a supported way of editing photos within the library from other applications. Access to the photos using supported APIs (e.g. browsing through photos to choose one to add to a document) will require permission from the user. > Also "secured" > > -Mail database > -Message history > -Safari data > -Time machine backups > -iTunes device backups > -Locations and routines > -System cookies > > > SIP protections will be available to apps. > > > Notarized apps: extension of the Developper ID program. > Block malware before it gets distributed > > > If you doN't distribute app via App Store, you must still get app > approved by Apple, where it gets "notarized" and you can then distribute > the notarized app via your web site or disjkettes or whatever you use to > distribute apps. This is better than the current situation where Apple's safest option in a malware situation is to revoke the developer's certificate and block all their apps (until the developer fixes the malware issue, gets a new certificate and re-releases all their apps using it). > When you first laujch app, the user's system checks with Apple to ensure > it is not a maliciosu app and that it was notarized. I'm curious how this is going to work if there is no Internet connection. > For Mojave, this isn't a hard requirement, but will be in a future > version. Other parts of the system are already identical or have compatible APIs on both platforms. > Apple will really be pushing that drak mode. Not just some icons but large portions of application user interfaces. Many applications will need updates to look right in dark mode. Dark mode is not going to work well for older applications that are an outdated version, using an old framework or abandoned by the developer. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

For posterity: sudo mkdir -p /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk sudo mkdir -p /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle This *should* trick those apps into thinking the old Java is installed. (note: requires SIP be disabled to do this).
