I swapped out my Windows-style keyboard for cleaning. I plugged in a
Mac-style keyboard and in System Preferences, disabled the Caps Lock.

When I tried the Windows keyboard to see if cleaning had improved
functioning, Mavericks remembered to swap the Alt and Opt keys.

The keyboard worked fine, but I swapped back to the Mac keyboard.
Mavericks remembered to disable the Caps Lock.

It seems to me that before Mavericks, when I swapped keyboards, I'd have
to reselect my preferences for the replacement.

you remember wrong. os x has tracked separate keyboards for a very long
time, at least tiger and probably before that.

Nope, I used to swap keyboards fairly regularly and OS X has always¹
tracked different keyboards differently. Sometimes it can't TELL that a
really generic keyboard is different from another really generic
keyboard, but that's very rare.

My little brother got his arm stuck in the microwave. So my mom had to
take him to the hospital. My grandma dropped acid this morning, and she
freaked out. She hijacked a busload of penguins. So it's sort of a
family crisis. Bye!

About two months ago, I bought a third-party wireless keyboard; its key
layout is almost identical to Apple's wired keyboard. When I first set
it up, the OS didn't recognize it and had me press both command keys.
the OS now recognizes it even after it is turned off and back on.

I used to have to change preferences when I swapped between Mac and PC
keyboards. This was the first time I used my Mac keyboard since
upgrading from 10.4 to 10.8 in 2012.

I've found a thread saying that under 10.6, people using a hub would
have to redo keyboard preferences every time they plugged in the
keyboard even it was their only keyboard.
