512 GB is tiny to me. Too bad APple don't have bigger drives by defaults
yet. You have to mail order with customizations. :( I wonder when Apple
will make bigger sizes by defaults without having to do mail order
customizations..

You can custom-build a Mac with bigger drives via Apple's online
webstore or you can order a custom-build Mac through any physical Apple
Store or authorised reseller (they can let you know when it arrives for
you to pick-up).

Rather than pay Apple $1400 for 2TB, I'll pay Buffalo $200 for a 2TB
Thunderbolt 3 SSD. I don't know how my HDD got so bloated lately!

It's incredibly easy. We used to be able to carry around a few 400K
floppy disks with all our files, but now even a 2TB hard drive is
becoming too small, let alone Apple's fetish for small capacity SSDs.

The main culprits are over-bloated apps and OS (Microsoft Word, for
example, used to easily fit on a floppy disk, but now the app itself is
2.19GB not including all the extra files it needs!), and the growing
size of things like video and music files due to the increasing quality
(often indistinguishable for most people).

I just dislike having to carry extra stuff with the MacBook. :( I like
having everything inside it.

There have always been dongles.

Hell, laptops used to last a couple of hours, so you had to carry a
power brick and a cord. You needed floppy disks. If you wanted to
connect to an external monitor, you'd need something for that. You
probably didn't have Ethernet, and in the early days of wifi you'd need
a dongle for wifi. Of course, you'd need serial dongles for some
software, maybe a phoinenet dongle, and of course all the other things
you'd have to carry with your laptop (floppies and/or CDs, a serial to
ADB adapter, SCSI cable and terminator, etc etc).

The first laptop I bought (for my wife) weighed over 5 pounds, not
counting the power cord and charger. By the time you got everything you
needed into a bag, you were well over 10 pounds. Unlike most laptops at
the time, you could get an internal modem (2400 baud) so that was one
less thing you needed to carry.

Oh, it also cost just about $5,000 in 2018 dollars.

Maybe, but do you really need immediate access to the 1.5TB of cat
videos you downloaded from YouTube?? ;-)

Most of the stuff people store on their computer drives is useless
garbage they never use again. Very little of it is actually important
and much less is needed to ben instantly accessible from whever they
might be.

I downloaded William Dwight Whitney's "The Century Dictionary of the
English Language," 1889-91, 1.1 GB, to look up a single word, but I
can't imagine throwing it away.

I downloaded the "Record of the Massachusetts Volunteers 1861 - 1865,"
760 MB, to find out if the 47th was as bad as they say. I would have
thrown it away if I hadn't found it valuable for other information.

I considered throwing away Buster Keaton's "The Paleface," but what if
Sir Paul McCartney bought up the publishing rights to keep it from being
shown online?

I know that. I meant by defaults like from the stores without doing
custom orders.

No retailer can nor wants to keep many different possible combinations
in stock. Not even Apple wants to bother doing that, which is why
you're custome-build Mac is manufactured when you order it.

The side affect of this is that:
A. The average buyer doesn't even know you can get a Mac
with more RAM or bigger storage drive.

B. Those who do know don't buy the regular stock, so stores
don't bother stocking as many boxes as they used to, which
can mean a wait if you do want a popular off-the-shelf
    model.

Because having something delivered to your door is so inconvenient?

Actually it is, when you’re not home during the day (like most people).

In that case, order it for delivery to your nearest Apple Store, or
through an authorised Apple reseller, and pick it up when it arrives.

I can see that working. I order a books from Amazon and have it
delivered to the nearest Yoobee or Noel Leemings branch (since there is
no official Apple Store in New Zealand) ... I'm sure they'll be
ecstatic. ;-)

We aren't talking about Amazon. I'll assume you meant Apple.

> and have it delivered to the nearest Yoobee or Noel Leemings branch (since

No. You go into your nearest Noel Leeming, Oobe, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman
or other authorised reseller, specify what you want, they place the
custom order with Apple for delivery to the retailer, and then you pick
it up from the retailer when it arrives. Costs exactly the same as
ordering it from Apple's online store.

(I happened to be in a Noel Leeming branch yesterday and this exact
subject came up for another customer - the staff member confirmed that
is exactly how it works.)

Jolly Roger simply said "Because having something delivered to your
door is so inconvenient?" ... that could be anything being deliverd
from anywhere.

Have it delivered to work instead. That's what I used to do when I
worked in an office and ordered books or computer games from Amazon,
etc. Now, being self-employed, I work from home, so it is much easier.
:-)

Many places do let you add specific delivery instrauctions (like
"Please put behind planter around the left side of the house") ... but
whether the delivery driver bothers to read that, let alone follow the
instructions, is an entirely different matter.

have it sent to an apple store for pickup or to wherever you are during
the day.

or, after the first failed delivery attempt, call fedex/ups and pick it
up at the depot.

I was very pleased to find out that I could (via the web) redirect my
wife’s Apple Watch (FedEx) to the local Walgreen’s without even having
had one attempt at delivery. And I have been able to contact UPS and have
them hold things at their depot for pickup before a delivery attempt as well.

I think some genius is going to come up with a solution to this mess and get
filthy rich. My thought... start building homes with double front doors. One
in front of the other with a small space between them for packages.

The conventional solution is a butler. A butler can also answer
telemarketing calls that you would otherwise have missed.

Nowadays, schools turn out butlers qualified to repair computers, and
you get to decide whether your butler may wear polo shirts.

Many men prefer lady butlers because their salaries are lower. Wives
often prefer lady butlers because they're less likely to make unwanted
advances or lewd remarks.
