We Zonies (what Californians call AZ tourists) have a 101 and also call
it "the 101". And I take "the 10" and "the 8" when I visit and pay those
exorbitant CA taxes...

Please visit more often, as the California state sales tax is stupendously
high, so you can help defray our costs. 

In addition, the hotel taxes are astronomical, so do stay at a hotel.

And, I've found, a taxi that originates from an airport costs more than the
exact same taxi ride that doesn't originate from the airport - so use the
taxi please!

(You gotta love a state that taxes you even when you never owe them a cent,
which only NY and CA do - and CA does it hugely more than NY which only
taxes you $100 when you don't owe them money but file income taxes late).

You also gotta love a state that sales taxes the salles tax on top of both
tires and soda bottles. In the case of soda bottles, if you paid, say, $100
in the year for the CRV, you only get back about $90 because California
*taxes* the CRV!

Likewise, you pay a sales tax to buy a tire, and then you pay *another*
sales tax on that same tire when you bring it in for disposal!

They also have a sales tax on phones that you get for free - yup - you pay
about $70 sales tax on a free $700 phone even though you get the phone for
free (of course, you're paying for the phone internally in your contract
but *that* is taxed also!).

Any state that can have consistently the highest taxes in the nation
deserves notice - especially since it's the only state I know of that is
too poor to afford yellow school buses.

QUESTION:
Is there any other state other than California that is too poor to afford
yellow school buses?

Strange, I live in San Luis Obispo County, CA, and every school bus around 
here is traditional school bus yellow, even those run by less affluent school 
districts. There must be something odd happening with Santa Clara County 
schools.

I live in Orange County and the school buses here are yellow too.  In 
fact I thought it was done this way intentionally for many years to 
ensure people know, even at a great distance that this is a bus full of 
children and to be careful.

We bought a used school bus a long time ago.  We had to paint it.  ONLY 
real school buses are ALLOWED to be and MUST be painted School Bus 
Yellow.  Maybe it's different now.

School buses here in New Zealand are just regular public service buses 
with the destination signs changed and (in most cases) an extra 
fold-out sign sign on the back which says "School" ... but a lot of the 
time the drivers either forget to change the fold-out sign to / from 
"School" or they don't bother securing it open / closed so it just 
flaps around.

The idiots in the Auckland City Council are even reducing the number of 
school buses (forcing kids onto public buses or the "mummy-daddy taxi 
service") ... while at the same time the country's government is 
changing laws to not allow kids to be standing up on school buses (but 
kids on public buses will still no doubt be expected to give up their 
seat to adults).

I can’t speak for NZ, but here in California, and most other States that I 
am familiar with, NY, North Carolina, Tennesee, and Georgia school buses have 
features beyond the *school bus yellow* paint scheme. They have specialized 
front and rear flashing amber warning lights, flashing red stop lights which 
operate when the bus has stopped. With those lights flashing, most state 
vehicle codes demand that vehicles travelling in either direction come to a 
stop until either a set of amber lights start flashing, or the red lights 
stop flashing and the bus moves on, unless it is a divided highway.

The fines for failure to stop can be heavy. In California, per CVC 22454 and 
VEH 22112 the civil infraction for passing a school bus with flashing red 
signals comes with a typical fine of $616, and can go as high as $1000 with a 
possible driving privilege suspension up to a year.

Only school buses can be painted school bus yellow, but they do not have
to be. Our high school school bus for our team away games was blue.

(I think the restriction on the color only applies to buses, not cars).

The only free public school buses here in the Silicon Valley that I know of
are for the special-needs kids.

since I don't know why there are no public school buses in any town I've

school bus service to normal students.

The free public school buses exist only for special-needs keds, and I'm

He is somewhat correct. However, his original bitch was California’s 
inability to provide free, YELLOW school busses, I quote;

"QUESTION:Is there any other state other than California that is too poor to 
afford yellow school buses?”

In California different school districts have different plans for paying for 
student transportation. The largest school district in Northern San Luis 
Obispo County, The Paso Robles Unified School District charges $190/year for 
a full year, and $95/half-year with options for round trip, or one way 
routes, with various discounts for more than one child. Families on 
assistance are provided free transport for their kids. Other school districts 
have other rates, some free. I guess Santa Clara County, and Silicon Valley 
with all those six figure homes figured that their residents could afford to 
pay for their kids’ transport.

Thank you for acting like an adult should act in this post of yours.

I will respond to you Savageduck as if you're an adult, because thise post
from you is one of the first in this thread where you (mostly) act like an
adult should act.

My responses always mirror the tone of the posting I respond to.

I readily admit the fact that a school bus for free public school
transportation is always (or almost always) yellow.  They're distinctive
for a reason, which was already stated by others. 

The adult point was never the actual color though - the color was just to
underscore that the "typical" free public school bus is distinctively
yellow (and it has distinctive red lights on it also - and black markings
that are distinctive, etc.). 

Hence I apologize if people thought the topic was about the color.

The topic is about why California school districts I'm familiar with
universally seem to not offer the free yellow public school bus with
distinctive read lights and black markings that I have seen in every other
state that I've lived in.

I don't know WHY I've never seen a *free* yellow public school bus in any
of the school districts I've lived in - and - trust me - the districts I
live in are some of the highest scoring districts in California in terms of
student quality (i.e., test scores due to demographics, one of which is
income and education of the parents).

*Californian parents seem to be just fine with driving kids every day!*

Bear in mind, that's every day, twice a day, where the dropoff is around
8am 'ish, but the pickup for any one school can be anywhere between noon on
short days to 2pm 'ish or 3pm 'ish (or even 6pm 'ish for athletes) where
there are these strange interspersed days off and weeks off that have no
bearing on normal vacation schedules (AFICT).

Parents have to arrange these parent taxis constantly, every day,
particularly for those with kids in all three levels, elementary, middle,
and high school (where the start & end times are all different). 

It's just crazy.

That fails any basic test of logic.

While this is great information, as far as I know, NONE of the school
districts I lived in even *offer* the option to pay for the typical yellow
school bus. And, you can just about forget public transportation.

I think the federal government subsidizes "special needs" kids.

It's really not the *cost* that is the issue - but the huge inconvenience.
I drove my kids and the neighbor's kids to school for many years.
Now I drive the grandkids and the neighbor's kids to school every day.

There is one advantage, which is that we get "quality time" with the kids.
They can't get out of the car while it's moving anyway. :)

The disadvantage isn't money - as driving doesn't cost all that much.
The disadvantage is the huge inconvenience of having to drive kids to
school, and then pick them up every single week day while school is in
session.

It's just crazy. It's inefficient to say the least.
And, it's not that we don't pay enough in taxes already.

My supposition is that only in California would parents put up with this.
Would parents in any other state put up with such a crazy system?

It's one reason why I said "Californians are different" than most people.
