#117244 — Mac refuses to sleep

For two years, my 2012 Mini has sometimes waked back up within 10
seconds after I chose Sleep under the apple menu. Sometimes it would do
it a second time. I've never found anything in the system log that might
explain it to me.

Today it did it four times in a row with unusually short delays, maybe 1
second. Finding no note about waking in the system log, I got frustrated
and restarted.

What could cause the problem?

I believe some apps like video, audio streaming apps prevent the machine
from going to sleep. When you force machine to go to sleep, their
backrgound processing would cause it to come back up.

I had suspected that, but when I restarted today and logged back in, I
watched for the CPU use to slow to an idle, then told it to sleep. It
woke right back up.

I hadn't had trouble in days or weeks until I updated to 10.13.5 a few
days ago. When I came in and found the process complete, I told it to
sleep and it woke right back up.

In the last couple of years, I've seen a lot of log entries about
IMRemotURLConnectionAgent and ASL Sender Statistics. I wonder if they're
overruling my sleep commands.

It's probably easier to try removing hardware to the bare minimum and seeing
if it will boot then. Wired Keyboard and Mouse shouldn't do anything wierd
unless the USB port they're plugged into is dying. If you're using any sort
of USB hub, remove that and try sleeping.

Try creating a regular user account, login, and see if it will sleep without
any of the login items. If not, maybe its something that's run in
/Library/Launch{Agents,Daemons}.

Try booting in SAFE mode (with SHIFT pressed). Login to your user account and
see if you can sleep. If not, then maybe there's something in your login
items. Log out and login again with SHIFT pressed to skip them.

If there's still a problem, maybe there's something in your
/System/Library/Extensions that's interfering. That's off-limits without SIP
disabled, but there might be cruft from a upgrade.

Somewhere along the line, sleep will start working. If not, take it to Apple
and have a Genius Bar person check it out.

there are wired mice that send non-stop usb activity which will prevent
sleep.

i had one once.

As a matter of course, I've changed my USB stuff, including my hub,
since the problem appeared.

It happens only occasionally. If it worked properly 100 times in Safe
mode or another account, that wouldn't prove anything.

I have 10 extensions, all for my Samsung USB drive. I had the problem
before I got the drive.

I sleep my computer dozens of times each day. It hasn't malfunctioned
since right after I restarted June 15. It probably wouldn't happen at a
Genius Bar.

When it malfunctions, I've noted the time and tried to find something in
the system log. I haven't found it.

that's going to make diagnosing it difficult.

standard usb drives do not need kernel extensions.

some drives include bundled software, which may install a kext, and
it's almost always crappy software that's not needed and best avoided.

it's very possible that's your problem.

The same thing happens here once in a while. In my case, the cause
is that after putting the computer to sleep, in rising from the desk
I inadvertently bump something and make the cursor move.

That sometimes happened to me when I walked into the room. The system
log would say a USB event had waked it. Now the log doesn't seem to
mention waking, whether it's intentional or unintentional.
