#116522 — How to put OS and other software onto a Macintosh IIci?

SubjectHow to put OS and other software onto a Macintosh IIci?
Message-ID<7fd0b389-cd9c-48e8-88ff-c03e6d0a311b@googlegroups.com>
I'm hugely into Apple II and IIgs. But the Macintosh IIci had really got my attention so I have a bare bones IIci arriving in the next few days. It has no hard drive, so I'm thinking of getting a SCSI2SD device. It also has no monitor, and no input devices but I think I can figure those things out.

With Apple II's I'm used to using Ciderpress and ADTPro to load in software to cards like the CFFA3000 and the MicroDrive/Turbo.

What are the options available for loading OS and other downloadable software onto a IIci?

you're going to need a monitor, hard drive, adb keyboard/mouse.

cd-rom or a *lot* of floppies.

Can I make those CDs on a Windows PC?

A flaming bush that never burns, magnified by the reciprocal of a limitless imagination, demonstrating the vast nothingness of the main character's so-called thought process.

The whole buffonery is packed of bizarre gaps and leans heavily on Vallor's 'vitamin D' claim. Vallor must realize that Steve Petruzzellis can go get Access, right, gluey? And, of course, anyone can filter his posts, which renders *his* immature nonsense harmless, just like Vallor.

It was Vallor who forged me and did not even try to hide it.

Monitor will probably be the hardest thing to find, honestly. Not any
old VGA will work.

Yes, I installed 7.5.5 via Floppies. I think it was 14 floppies, or that
is the number that comes to mind. I have no way to check and that was
well before CD-Rs. A CD Drive will have to be SCSI, so good luck on
that. I think Apple had disk images for system 7.something available for
download at one time, but I don't know about that anymore.

The IIci used ADB, so finding and ADB mouse and keyboard will be
required, but those aren't that scarce. Well, at least not keyboards. I
am alos not sure that the IIci really supports CD drives (like, can it
boot from one? Probably, SCSI is SCSI, but I don't know. Our IIci
predated optical drives)

The best place to go is probably a site like lowendmac.com and see if
they have forums, or mention forums on other sites.

Some of this stuff is quite tricky as it's been obsolete for sloe to 30
years.

Here's a site that still offers four 7.5.5 disks. They download in hqx,
and there are four of them. The site still appears to work.
<https://udcf.gla.ac.uk/~gwm1h/system7.5.5/>
I was interested in the site when the System 7 disks for my Powerbook
520C rotted and I was looking for replacement for old times sake. I
couldn't figure out how to exchange the files from a modern Mac to the
old Mac as bootable. I needed four floppies that I had no equipment to
convert to or read anymore. I make no recommendations regarding the
site that I still have bookmarked.
Other than that, old hardware technology will screw the OP unless they
want to shell out way more money and time than the computer is worth.
Make it a indeterminate cost hobby.
This may be costlier than restoring a Model T Ford right now, but
persevere. A functioning IIci with cool software might justify the
cost.
If nothing else, you'll learn something from the project.

For old Mac software and help, the best resource website is MacintoshGarden.org

You can transfer files from new Mac or Windows to an old Mac using
old-Mac-format floppies or old-PC-format floppies ... but DO NOT
extract any Mac archives on a Windows PC (it will destroy the dual
forks in application files!).

You can also of course also CD-R or CD-RW discs if you old Mac can read them.

If the old Mac doesn't even boot (and assuming it actually works), then
of course you'll need to create the bootable System install disks /
CDs. The easiest way is to download disk images and create physical
disks usinf Disk Utility or Toast on a new Mac. There are applications
on Windows PCs to do the same, but I use Windoze as little as possible
... which means almost never.

I was lucky enough to find a Mac OS 7.6.1 CD and it's on the way. I also found an Apple CD 300 and it's on the way. Will need to find cables though.

My recollection is that 7.6.1 was a very good version.

Those would be the 7.5.5 update, not the full install, I believe.

you believe correctly.

7.5.3 was the last downloadable version, which could later be updated
via the 7.5.5 update, also available for download. i don't remember why
they didn't just release 7.5.5 directly, but there was a reason.

Any horribly obsessive sleep deprived whacko could easily do the same. Not only did Flatfish's question fail to touch on the "desktop", it has nothing to do with Cooledit. Steve Carroll-Petruzzellis should learn to read ;)

Gee, imagine Steve Carroll-Petruzzellis trying to pin his balderdash on me, no one has ever seen that before.

Flatfish is a false advocate's biggest fear. Yup. Unfortunately this is what we have to stop. Jerks who obviously have no reason for being here other than to attack Flatfish.

it's also an apple video plug. however, adding a nubus video card will
support pretty much any display (at least of what was available back
then).

19 floppies for 7.5.3, which apple used to offer for download, then
another one for the 7.5.5 update.

the problem is that they're macbinary (and probably binhex'ed), so
making a usable mac formatted floppy on a pc is next to impossible. it
can be done, but it is not easy.

all macs can boot from a cd-rom drive, assuming the cd itself is
bootable (not all were, even ones with a system on it).

no it didn't. the apple cd sc, a scsi 1x cd-rom drive, was released in
1988, *before* the iici, which was released in september, '89. i
vaguely remember the cd sc being released in early '88, which would
even have predated the iix.

yep.

Don't look now, but I think Allah has a serious woody for Owl.

Why does Allah focus on his own ego so much? What is your evidence?

It's simple to exaggerate by focusing on hardly any outliers different from what's common. What matters more from an honest advocates point of view are the average circumstances.

No Mac shipped with a CD drive when the IIci came out. The IIci did not
have a CD ROM drive. With the possible exception of $10,000+ servers, no
macs had Optical drives at the time and no System software came on CDs
for you to boot from and install without using floppies, which is the
point of all this.

Even if you did have a CD drive, you wouldn't have a Mac OS installer on
a CD image anyway.

However, now that I think about it, it's possible the floppy images were
a virtual volume spanning many discs, so putting all the images onto a
single drive (HD or CD) and opening the first image Might let you run
the installer because it will mount all the disk images.

Don't quote me on that one though, this is knowledge I tried to flush
decades ago.

the apple cd sc was an *external* 1x cd drive, released in 1988. other
models followed, from apple and other companies.

a/ux shipped on cd well before macos did.

as i recall, all of the floppy images were mounted, then the installer
on the first image was launched and it did its thing.

same here, but some remains.

Did God think that was clever?

It was God who got busted using tons of accounts over and over, and these are 'people' who come basically out of the blue directly into threads where he was being proved wrong... by Jesus for years.

God only thinks about Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!
