Are there any good alternative mail clients for Mac?

I usually like to use the built-in stuff like Mail, but it is just too buggy.

Thanks.

Really? How so?

Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM
filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting
messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google
Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts.

I dunno, Mail.app is not buggy. I run between 4 and 9 accounts through
it dealing with literally thousands of mail messages a day. Granted, I
don't use rules in Mail.app and I only have 5 or 6 signatures setup.
Other than that, I use mail.app very heavily.

Plenty. Here is a recent rundown of a few:

Not sure what you find buggy about Mail. I doubt that any other
clients are less buggy. Certainly Outlook is _more_ buggy, on either
Mac or Windows.

The version supplied with OS 10.3 is quite good. The one with OS 10.4
seems to be ok, but I haven't used it much. The one with 10.5 deletes
messages at times when switching windows via Command-`. It does not
move them to the trash, it just completely whacks them, including the
copy on an IMAP server. It also takes two Command-0 commands to open
the Activity window (or clicking its menu entry twice), where one is
supposed to do it.

For that matter, OS 10.5 is seriously bug-ridden. People with PPC
computers would, on the whole, be better off running 10.4.

In the way of just annoying crap, to select what you want to search on
with the 10.3 user agent, you can just click on the little disclosure
triangle next to the magnifying glass in the search string entry box.
With the 10.5 version, you have to type in at least two characters
first, then a menu of choices will appear below. Lame. The disclosure
triangle is gone. This sort of stuff does not bode well for later
versions of Mail.

Thunderbird seems in general to be much better, but it does not make
it easy to sync just one mail account, while leaving all the others
alone. Of course, if you only have one account, or don't care about
this, it is a better choice.

> I doubt that any other clients are less buggy.

I'm only about a week into trying them, but so far it has not been
much fun.

I have mail archives dating back to 1999 in Mail.app (I'd have them back
to 1987, but I lost the 9track tape that backed-up my old home directory
in 1992 and I decided since I didn't have them all, I purged my mailbox
when I switched to OS X from the pre 1999 mails), so no, that's not
happened to me.

I haven't run PowerPC machines in a long time, but I do not remember
much trouble with 10.5 at all, though I much preferred 10.6.

> Thunderbird seems in general to be much better,

I think ThunderBird is terrible. Possibly the worst non-Microsoft mail
reader I've ever used (and I've used a lot of them). I'd rather use
Eudora 6 under emulation than use ThunderBird. I'd rather use mailx via
a vt-100 terminal than use ThunderBird.

I'm evaluating user agents on backed-up filesystems... I made mbox
copies of all my VMS mail, as my postmaster doesn't want to keep paying
all the costs of keeping it up now that just a few things are still
running on it. VMS also isn't very zippy with thousands of files in
one's mail directory. We're moving to Oracle's Convergence messaging
system, and it is _much_ faster.

After spending a lot more time on this, I can't exactly call
Thunderbird terrible, but can it be damn annoying? Yes. I've
come to like Apple's user agent more, and will be using it. I
was also looking at mutt (a character cell terminal user agent),
so I could use a decent text editor to write messages, but it
also has some shortcomings - no way to search separately on 'to,'
'from,' or 'subject,' for example - so I'll just paste stuff
into the editor when need be.

> I'd rather use mailx via a vt-100 terminal than use ThunderBird.

I'd rather have stayed where I was (VT-510, or an emulator). I
don't care about html in mail, but it seems I'm one of all too few
who feel that way these days...

I'm not doubting your experience, but I've had none of these problems,
nor have I heard them generally reported as issues. It may be that
there is some peculiarity of your own situation for some reason.

Very funny Mr. Balmer. Next time, don't post from a Belvue or Redmond
ISP. At least you didn't post from the company network, but then they
probably block access to news groups.

You must be using the Microsoft definition of 'bug' which means "works
on my machine"

I use Thunderbird, it has everything that I need for a mail program.
The mail program for Mac is fine, I just prefer Thunderbird.

I used use TB on my Windows PC for mail and usenet. When I moved to the
Mac I used Apple Mail for a few months, but disliked it for reasons now
forgotten. But TB doesn't integrate smoothly with OS X (IMO) for moving
documents (attachments) in and out so I switched back to Apple Mail.
But I still use TB for usenet. Setting up Apple Mail for POP is a PITA
as it gravitates to IMAP for servers that have it (such as gmail) and
occasionally (about 1/ yr) it upgefuchts the POP settings completely and
requires maintenance account by account.

I attempted to use MS Outlook on OS X as it was part and parcel of MS
Office for the Mac. On a PC, in a work environment Outlook is the best
(if greatly complex). However Outlook would present some windows (like
days of the week in the calendar) in Finnish or Norwegian (some such).

I tried to fix these issues via the Microsoft support site (which blamed
everything on OS X and me in equal measure) but none of the solutions
offered ever worked. (Other people has similar issues). I gave up on
Outlook (but Word, Excel and Powerpoint are fine).

You know, if I didn't really want a local backup, I'd use Gmail's
(through Google Apps you can even use your own domain name) web mail
without bothering about a local client (currently I run Apple Mail on my
iMac using IMAP, and I back that up). It's not perfect, but does nearly
everything, anywhere, on any device I desire.

But what exactly do you find buggy about Apple Mail? I'm still using OS
X 10.6.8, but maybe others can assist with newer versions.

it's incompatible with postfix, which can pre-sort mail into folders by
using a + and a folder name, such as abc+apple@myisp.com. it's a great
way to instantly create a new email folder for a sender and to track
the source who leaked the email address to spammers.

apple mail ignores imap folders other than the inbox, regardless of the
email never having been seen by apple mail or being unread. apparently
nobody at apple ever heard of postfix, which is used by many isps and
in particular, a little known service called gmail, which they must not
use either.

what apple mail should do is apply filters to *all* new mail,
regardless of which folder it's in. if apple mail sees new mail on the
isp that it hasn't seen before, it should be eligible for filtering.

Snow Leopard Server comes with Postfix as mail server, and Dovecot as
POP and IMAP servers.

So yeah, I would say that Apple was aware of it at the time I did servers.

With Lion, Apple changed things around and not sure it is still dovecot,
and I think they also changed squirrel mail (web interface to your
mailbox). But Postfix remained.
