#74964 — Unwanted pop-up menu

FromAthel Cornish-Bowden <athel_cb@yahoo.co.uk>

SubjectUnwanted pop-up menu
Message-ID<cqupn7FbukpU1@mid.individual.net>
Recently OS 10.7.5 on my Macbook Air has been increasingly doing
something that it never did before (or did only very rarely). I notice
it most when I'm using TexShop, but I think it comes from the OS rather
than from TexShop, as it also sometimes happens when I'm not in TexShop.

In the past, if I clicked somewhere in a document the pointer would go
to that point, and if I double-clicked it would select the word I
clicked on. Increasingly often, however, it behaves as if I had the
ctrl key down at the time of my action. So, instead of selecting the
word I clicked on it offers a pop-up menu that I don't usually want. In
the Finder, for example, clicking on "Macintosh HD" gives a menu that
starts with Open, Get Info, etc. In TexShop it starts with "Sync", but
the principle is the same.

This has had one good effect in that I have learned how to make the
Ctrl key a lot more useful than I ever did before, but I find it
absolutely maddening to be offered a menu when I haven't asked for one
(and when it refuses to go away).

I thought there might be a Preference set somewhere in the Systems
Preferences that causes this behaviour, but I can't find one.

Is there any way to switch it off, so that I only get a menu if the
ctrl key is down? There is nothing to suggest that the ctrl key is
sticking, incidentally.

You are describing the effects of a right click. It can also be
triggered by a two-fingered tap on the trackpad (and maybe on the Magic
Mouse as well).

What you're describing sounds to me like you're occasionally
"fat-fingering" a right click (which is, unless changed, usually a
ctrl-click) rather than the "normal", AKA "left" click you intend. Try
paying closer attention to click-placement - No promises, but I'm
betting you'll either notice that what I describe is really what's
happening, or that the frequency of unwanted menus popping up goes way
down, or even stops completely.

Yep, it's either:

   - an accidental right-click

   - a dying mouse / trackpad

   - a semi-stuck / broken Control key on the keyboard.

Just turn off the right-click option in the Mouse or Trackpad system
preferences. As long as it's not the stuck / broken Control key, then
Control-clicking will still product the pop-up menus.

Getting rid of the two-finger click option seems to have cured it -- no
great loss as I never use the two-finger click anyway. Thanks to all of
those who answered.
