Not here it isn't. Here, use of that phrase is slightly aggressive, and
implies that the person to whom it is addressed understands perfectly
well the issue at hand, but is trying to pretend that they don't.

No. Not in the slightest.

"You can do that pretty well with the Dock as well you know..."

That's what I thought when I first read it. When I re-read it, with a
comma (as in "You can do that pretty well with the Dock as well, you
know....") it takes on a whole different meaning, which isn't offensive.

Nope. It could imply "Oh noes, this isn't like what I used in 1992, it must

Frankly, there are soooo many better options that resurrecting the Apple
menu that I am really surprised anyone is still putting forth effort on
resurrecting a bit of System 7.

Yup. I suspect that's closer to home in this case.

Some folks seem to be hopelessly and forever stuck in the past,

No, I said it to a guy who refuses to let go of the ancient Apple
menu paradigm when other (some better) options exist. ; ) Nice try,

it's exactly what you said.

Typical useless waste-of-time mr.know-it-all argument, claiming to know
what someone else meant to say better than the person who actually said
it. Lame.

Voicing my opinion about it doesn't equate to forcing anyone to do anything.

No one is trying to force anything down anyone's throat, because all of
us (well, all of us except you) have figured out that words in a
newsgroup can't force anyone to do anything.

What SOME of us were trying to do was educate him.

That's rich, coming from you. You've come to the conclusion that I'm
"hopelessly and forever stuck in the past resisting *any* changes, good
or bad" based on ONE program I use - and, yet, you completely discount
the other hundreds of ways I'm standing, not at the leading edge of
technology, but at the BLEEDING edge of technology.

I've seen you do this to other people, over the years, bur I always
figured they deserved it. I know better, now.

Yeah, you've sure got a keen grasp of your own close-minded view of the
world. If it helps you feel superior to make pompous pronouncements
based on thin air, fine. Whatever lets you sleep at night.

But let's see if you can recognize someone who's REALLY "hopelessly
stuck in the past", OK?

"With a single click, I can literally navigate to any folder or file in

should give that up?"

That's you insisting the Dock can't do something that it can, in fact, do.

I said "some people". Whether you fit that definition or not at that
time was unknown. And it was more about you complaining about Apple making
the change while dismissing or refusing to admit there are other ways to
do the same things. Had you simply said, "yes, I see there are other
ways, but still prefer this one" and left it at that, I doubt we'd be
having this discussion to begin with.

Some people doesn't mean "only you". As you have pointed out in later
posts, it's possible to be resistant to some changes but not others.
Naturally, all humans are guilty of this, including me - and you.

And now you're doing it to me in this very post. One good deed deserves
another? : )

My statement, no matter how you dislike it, is true: Some people *do*
seem to be hopelessly and forever stuck in the past, resisting change.
You have made it clear you aren't one of them, and that's a good thing.

The key difference is I am not complaining that things have changed,
while you are. ; )

While I do have newer hardware that does run the latest and greatest,
I'm not about to throw perfectly useful machines away strictly because
they can't run the latest OS - especially when they are providing useful
services to me.

Not sure what you think is wrong with this.

Some people probably don't. I do. Do you? Not sure what this has to do
with anything.

You sure get bent out of shape easily.

I explained all this in detail. I wasn't "complaining" about anything.
I thought the new system font was a little harder to read than the old
one. That's "complaining"? No, that's an observation. You really
think it's just my poor, old eyes? It's not just ME... and it's NOT
unjustified.

I deal closely with fonts every day. I keep pointing that out because
you should know that I have a better than average acquaintance with the
subject. On certain subjects, I'm not just an idiot on Usenet. None of
us are... we all have our areas of expertise. But, don't take my word
for it... maybe you'll listen to an objective expert:

"It's definitely harder to read," Ina Saltz, a typography expert,
professor and author of Typography Essentials: 100 Design Principles
for Working With Type told The Huffington Post. "The light weight of
Helvetica Neue is much thinner."

"So why is it so hard to read? Saltz said the problem is the stroke
width, or the thickness of the lines that make up each individual
letter. "If you look at that, it's much lighter," she said."

"Helvetica Neue doesn't have the legibility that Lucida Grande has,
which is especially important for a font that will be used for big
blocks of text, Saltz said. "Any good type designer will say that
legibility is paramount," she added."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/05/mac-new-font_n_5451636.html

Now, I KNOW that Usenet is full of people who are full of shit, and
will whine about the smallest thing - but that is not what I'm doing.
When I say it's harder to read, it's not a simplistic spur of the
moment value judgement made by someone who likes to shoot from the lip.
It's harder to read BECAUSE. IT'S. HARDER. TO. READ. Measurably and
demonstrably.

It is NOT my opinion... it's an undeniable FACT.

The dock... I wasn't complaining about the dock. I wasn't even
thinking of the dock. I NEVER give the dock a second thought...

All I said was that Yosemite made the Apple logo in the upper left
corner a few pixels smaller, and it made Classic Menu render it's
larger apple logo incorrectly. I then also said that I had fixed the
resource, and that it was a "minor annoyance".

After that, I found myself having to defend my choice of Classic Menu,
like I was a felon on trial. Instead of a civil discussion about a
freaking MINOR change to the menubar, it became an attack on me as a
Luddite. You really think that's fair? Attack, snipe, attack again...
 disregard all the facts.

No wonder Usenet is dying. If I wanted the abuse, I could go on Facebook...
