Ever since updating to 10.9.2, my MacBook Pro has crashed at least once a day with a kernel/memory panic. My nearest dealer is hours away :-( : / Not very helpful. Can you take a look at the system log (at /var/log/system.log) and see what entries have a date and time stamp close to 3/2/14 3:40:54 and 3/1/14 2:41:11? It's possible more information is available there about what's going on just prior to the panic. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. My nearest dealer is hours away :-( Unless you have AppleCare, your options for resolving this are limited. If it continues, it's time to schedule a day trip with your system and all the hardware. Be sure to pre-book a Concierge appointment so you don't show up only to find they're booked for the day. At the end of it, your system will either be working or logged into their repair center. Then you get to drive back and do it again to pick it up or pay to have the drop ship it to your home. I don't know how people live without Apple service when they're "hours away" from the nearest store. Maybe it's time to consider moving. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... Maybe it's time to consider moving. You don't actually have to step foot in an Apple retail store. Instead, you can call Apple support and a support representative will call you back within minutes to diagnose the problem over the phone. If service is needed, they can arrange shipment right there on the phone with you. <https://www.apple.com/support/contact/> -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. No recent releases of MacOS have a GUI alert for problems and most of Apple's OEM drives don't work with Apple's SMART status. HFS+ Journaling doesn't entirely work either so panics rapidly expand corruption. 'fsck -fy' in single user mode is very robust. It may be able to rebuild damaged directory structures so you can complete your backup. It will also note if it encounters any unreadable blocks.

It could be as simple as the hard drive cable needs to be plugged in better or replaced. Anyone else? Nope. The only thing I've had happen with my MBP (2009) _AND_ the MBP (2012) is having it shutdown when it runs out of power *without* a warning. Since my primary use of the 2009 MBP is in Full Screen mode, I never see the battery monitor. Since the computer runs so damn long now without charging, I don't think to check. So, every now and then, the computer just turns off. Annoying, but not enough for me to start troubleshooting it, I'm still in the "complain but do nothing" stage. :) -- Ah we're lonely, we're romantic / and the cider's laced with acid / and the Holy Spirit's crying, Where's the beef? / And the moon is swimming naked / and the summer night is fragrant / with a mighty expectation of relief

Check what console shows at those times.
Various people have had varied issues ranging from scrambled/old
bookmarks in Safari, to the backlight on their Macbook not turning on
(the first time after update), to being forced to re-enter iCloud
details (3 for 3 here, iMac, MBA and MBP), iCloud settings not as
before, sync between iPhone/iMac lost, bouncing dock icons and others.
In my case all the problems were minor/transient. (OTOH I haven't
re-booted since the update so more may follow...)
