When I upgraded to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro I started having problems
with wifi -- it would no longer quickly/automatically re-connect to my
home wifi upon awakening from sleep. It seemed to fix it for awhile by
trashing all three relevant wifi/airport prefs, deleting the password
for the net in both local and system, and setting up a new "auto"
location. The problem came back after quite awhile and now doing all
those things doesn't help. It will reconnect fine with a restart and
sometimes by turning wifi off and on. I think it also works if you
logout from an account and log back in. I don't think it's a hardware
problem because it works fine once connected.

Anyone else still having this problem and any other bright ideas?

Sadly, having the same problem and more sadly, no idea what to do.
Problem only appeared with the upgrade to Mavericks on a MacBook Air 13
inch, Mid 2012, Intel Core I7 (MacBook Air5,2).

Mine's a MacBook Pro, Retina, 13" late 2012. One thing I've discovered
is that there seems to be some interaction with the sleep/wake process.
Normally I have the "immediately" option set on the password screen
unlock on my primary "account". I noticed that when I used a different
account that has the password-unlock option turned off, that it seemed
to wake and reconnect just fine. So I experimented with the password
delay: if I set it to, say, a minute, and wake it up before that minute
it usually seems to work. I won't say that the "failure modes" are
consistent, but it does seem to have something to do with the sleep/wake
cycle itself.

If you're talking about

System Preferences, General, Require Password <option> after sleep or
screen saver begins

I've left that unchecked. Not sure if I changed it after the upgrade
but I know I've had it that way for a while.

System Preferences, Security&Privacy...

I *think* it reconnects after sleep better if that is unchecked or has a
non-immediate grace time, but it definitely doesn't completely eliminate
the problem.

Ditto here on iMac 21.5 late 2012.

Right clicking the top menu bar WiFi icon, turning off WiFi, then
clicking Turn on Wifi gives me an immediate connection. What a PIA!

I found the solution (for me). I was reading through a *long* thread in
one of the Apple "community" forums about wifi failures after a
Mavericks upgrade. I'd tried all the suggested solutions, with little
success. Then I stumbled on one brief mention that someone had
discovered a problem with Bluetooth and wifi being on at the same time.
(Apparently they use the same general frequency band.) Sure enough --
I'd turned bluetooth on awhile ago for some reason and forgotten to turn
it off. I turned it off and my wifi problem disappeared -- it finds and
reconnects to my network instantly on being woken up, either from the
sleep menu item or the lid being closed, whether a short while or a long
while.

Dunno whether it's a hardware problem or a software problem but it's
clearly Apple's problem! What is weird (maybe not) is the interference
is only a problem on reconnecting -- once a connection is established
(which may take several tries of turning wifi off/on or restarts or
whatever) it is a solid connection.

Interesting. I read that too. I haven't had any issues with WiFi
connectivity on any of my Macs running Mavericks, luckily.

I assume the problem only exists on some hardware models. I don't
remember what model the person reporting the problem & solution in the
Apple forums had.

switch to a wired keyboard and mouse. If the problem goes away, you have
your solution. Otherwise, you don't have much else you can do.

Understood. I'm assuming it's a common enough problem Apple will
eventually figure out how to fix it (assuming it can be fixed by
software -- not likely to have "recalls" if it's a hardware problem).
If I *had* to have Bluetooth I'd write a little script to turn BT off on
wake-up and turn it back on after the wifi had reconnected.

Nothing is solved. You've just implemented a workaround that deprives
you of functionality (which may or may not inconvenience you, but it's
bound to not satisfy everyone).

That said, WiFi and Bluetooth occupy the same spectrum (2.4 - ~2.5 GHz)
with BlueTooth using a low power, frequency hopping technique in
narrower (1 MHz) bands (v. 20 or 40 Mhz for WiFi).

So it's understandable that the WiFi receiver might be glomming onto the
hopping(ish) 1 MHz wide signals of its own Bluetooth transmitter (which
is "pinging" to advertise its presence).

However, the WiFi acquisition code should be designed with that in mind.
Since the WiFi channel is fixed - once it finds a WiFi station that's
on its list - the BlueTooth would automatically avoid that band or at
least only collide there a few times.

Since the issue seems to have emerged under Mavericks, it should get
fixed some sunny day.

(Note: on my iMac I have three BlueTooth devices running with WiFi under
Mavericks - two of those devices are downstairs and over a room (meaning
the BT transmitter at the iMac will be at higher output power- no issues).

(Other note: I just changed to a dual band WiFi router and the WiFi of
choice is now in the 5 GHz band).

I don't remember if I said that would solve it or not -- but I ageree,
it doesn't really solve the problem but *could* be a workaround in some
situations. I would assume that Apple is aware of the problem and will
eventually come up with a fix.

Just a note of thanks for your persistence in tracking this down.
Turned off blue tooth and no more problem. I occasionally use a
bluetooth speaker with this machine but I guess I can turn on bluetooth
when doing so. As you say, once the wifi is on it's solid. Anyway,
till Apple fixes it, the workaround has ended my frustrations. Thanks
again.

You're welcome, although I wouldn't really say it was persistence but
just dumb luck in happening to read the right thread through far enough.
What lurks in my mind is that all the other proffered solutions, all
of which I tried, weren't really solutions at all, although why they
seemed to fix something temporarily is a mystery, and that the bluetooth
interference was the culprit all along, somehow exacerbated by whatever
was new in Mavericks in either the wifi or BT drivers.

I found a few articles in the Apple forums suggesting one should also trash

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

as well as

com.apple.network.identification.plist (in the same place)

I'm a little reluctant to try those since I don't know what all they
affect. (I can't even find the third one -- it's possible it's no
longer in Mavericks.)
