#55070 — Preview vs Adobe Reader

SubjectPreview vs Adobe Reader
Message-ID<lbk169$189$1@dont-email.me>
I have Mavericks. I downloaded my high-school yearbook as a PDF and
opened it with Preview. At Actual Size, the pages were less than 8"
wide and not very clear. When I zoomed, I could find no way to scroll
sideways. They still weren't very clear.

I tried Adobe Reader. At 100%, the pages were more realistic at 10"
wide, and I could scroll sideways. With the same page at the same size
on the screen, photos and captions were clearer with Adobe.

Is something wrong with Preview?

They seem to have done away with the scroll bars for some reason. But I
think you can grab the picture with the mouse and move it around, just
like your google map.

It wouldn't work for me. Sometimes apps and web pages have had a
panning option. I didn't see anything in any of the menus.

Has Apple done away with the "hand" tool on Preview ?

That's what he just said - it's not there. The cursor / arrow keys on
the keyboard apparently still work (according to a previous topic
complaining about a similar thing).

Sorry, you're right. That one was a question. It was the previous topic
where someone said scrollbars, etc. had been changed.

The arrows work, although Help said nothing about it. Thanks.

Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down probably also work, but it depends on
your keyboard as to how those keys are used. It's also possible that
holding down teh Command key while pressing the arrows does the same
thing (for example, Command-down arrow may do a Page Down).

Yes, and it seems to have been revised assuming everyone has a trackpad
or mouse which supports horizontal scrolling. In some cases the vertical
scrollbar doesn't appear either, unless you resize the window.

Horizontal scrolling can still be accomplished by holding down the shift
key and then scrolling up and down.

It was stupid for Apple to remove the panning (hand) tool from Preview.

Have you tried turning "always show" back on for scrollbars?

(This was one of the default changes Apple made that I truly hate, and
that they were nice enough to give us an easy-to-access option to
override)

System Preferences->General->Show scroll bars [set to Always]

Yes. I have had that setting enabled since I upgraded to Lion, and kept
it enabled in Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

It doesn't help. With that setting enabled, Preview in Mavericks doesn't
show the horizontal scroll bar for most documents (it may do for very
wide ones) and if the document is short enough it won't show the
vertical scroll bar either, despite there being document content outside
the window.

Both scroll bars can appear if the window is resized to an unreasonably
small width and/or height.

Maybe it's time to switch to something other than Preview.

Weird. I guess I don't think about it much because I've got trackpads
and a MagicMouse.

[and I was really caught by surprise the other day, checking something
for an officemate
on our machine there, running 10.9, and with old-fashioned scroll
direction still set! ]

I definitely get some weird behavior in Preview.

The default setting, btw, seems to always be "zoom" - which means,
apparently, zoom _horizontal_ dimension (only thing that makes sense
for "continuous" but should be one of two choices for single-page view).

Setting to "Actual" so that I can resize the window and create a need
to scroll horizontally, I get different behavior on two different
machines right now. (Both running 10.9).

On the machine with the Magic Mouse, I *do* get horizontal scroll bars,
and a swipe on the mouse also works just fine.

On the other machine, with a multitouch trackpad, I get no scroll bar,
but I can scroll via two-finger swipe on the trackpad.

And in both places, Adobe Reader just does the right thing. Scroll and
scrollbars work fine. And under zoom, as one might reasonably expect,
one of the options is "fit width", labeled as it ought to be.

Still, even with all this silliness, I really prefer Preview. I only
have Adobe Reader installed because of one vendor who apparently
"upgraded" their form generation software and in doing so, are now
generating some forms which Preview cannot open. The docs are
nominally PDF 1.7 docs (the ISO 32000-1 standard), but I still get the
"Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the
proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to
display this type of document." Why I get that with a PDF1.7 doc in
Preview, I do not know. And the vendor just hasn't got a clue. (The
documents are benig generated by Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 9.0 -- per
the Info window that Preview happily shows, even though it can't show
the doc contents itself. While another document from the same vendor,
also a PDF1.7, also generated with the same version of LiveCycle
Designer, opens just fine in Preview and in Adobe Reader. Go figure.)

Apple philosophy to simplify the computer to having a single full screen
with no buttons or scrolling. This makes it much simpler to use :-)

I'm still using Preview 2.1.0 from Panther (on Tiger), I never did like
the way later versions handled the select function. Too bad it won't run
on the newer systems or am I mistaken.
