If you set Calculator to open at startup (and remember not to Quit it after use) and set a keyboard shortcut, then using the Calculator application should have a negligible speed difference. Of course, if you use multiple Macs, especially other people's, then Spotlight would be standard across all of them, or at least all modern(ish) Macs.

I've always called that a "toilet roll" because that's what it looks like on a physical book keeping calculator. There's a story here. The first time I had to do a VAT return I only had a solar powered calculator, and this was in the days before spreadsheet programs became widely available/affordable (i.e. I didn' t have one). I discovered that the calculator simply couldn't add up across rows and down columns and come up with balancing figures. I even tried entering figures from bottom to top and right to left, to no avail. The result was that as soon as the shops opened the next day I bought myself a proper "toilet roll" calculator, which lasted me many years of good service. One tip here which I had picked up from work was attaching the relevant bits of the "till roll" calculations to paperwork; that made it easier to track any errors in input at a later date, and no doubt helped reduce my accountants bill. > Using google for routine calculations makes no sense to me since it > means opening up my web browser and pointing a page at it - that's > certainly no faster or easier than the alternatives unless I happen > to already be doing a search in Google. According ot the UK MacFormat magazine, command-C does copy the result of a calculation from Spotlight ... it doesn't say whether you have to click on it first though.

Thanks for that tip. Makes Spotlight's calculator even more useful. No need to click on anything - the calculation result is highlighted as you type in the formula, and Command-C copies the result as it is displayed in the result line. I frequently use Spotlight as a calculator, and in most cases the useful portion of the result is short enough that I can just remember it and didn't think to try copy and paste. All driven from the keyboard, of course: depending on configuration, either Command-Space or Control-Space brings up the Spotlight menu, and Escape twice gets rid of it again. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I find it more convenient to use the Applescript script editor to do simple calculations.

that's the new versioning system that came out with 10.7.
apple says the proper way is first duplicate the file, then work on
that. all changes are saved automatically.
apparently you have to know in advance you might need to make a
different version at some point in the future.
save as was only added back because people complained.

This is true. I'm having to learn in TextEdit to dismiss temporary
files and click "don't save" otherwise TextEdit asks me for a file
name--and if I decline, the stuff re-opens next launch still untitled.

In fairness, the removal of Save As was part of the intended switch to a system where we no longer think about savings explcitly, but rather that documents are simply there. It is a bold and interesting idea, which was rolled out with a heap of flaws. However, to Nospam, if it's "saving changes when you don't want it to", you (a) tell it to *ask* whether to keep changes or not. See Prefernces->General for the checkbox. Check the box.; And (b) otherwise, just ignore it. As for saving automatically as you go, and "reverting" to the last explicitly saved copy - that's not just a convenience, but it's a security mechanism. If the computer gets shut down, or the app quits unexpectedly, or whatever, this allows you a recovery of your otherwise lost incremental work. And if you didn't really want that incremental work, you can revert. Which is exactly what happens when you say "no, don't keep my changes" if you tell it to ask via that system pref. It's still got a ways to go, and my opinion is that the auto-lock was one of the best things about it -- making us explicitly indicate that we mean to change a file -- and *that* was removed when they went from 10.7 to 10.8 due to folks getting cranky about their files being locked. That one certainly should have been moved to being an option. But they're making progress on what looks to be one of the first major changes in the way general users (as opposed to, say, geeks like me who have used true revision management systems for decades) handle files. That all said, as glad as I am that they added back Save As..., I think it should simply have been added back to the menu directly, not only when one hits the Option key. Obfuscation like that doesn't benefit anyone.

I still don't see why it bothers you. It doesn't bother me at all since I don't use any version of Mac OS X with the silliness in it ... yet. :-) Personally I don't want silly "Versions" or ridiculous "Duplicate" commands. The Mac OS has worked perfectly well without them for decades ... as the saying goes, you don't fix what aint broke.

If we followed that philosophy, we would have no personal computers (hey, my mechanical typewriter still works, why do I need to replace it?), cars (I can walk, take the train or ride a horse, who needs a car?) or all manner of other inventions. Versions and auto-save offer protection from unplanned events (software or hardware failure, power cuts, other unplanned events), and offers possibilities to create a new document as a fork of an old document from some intermediate point in the old document's life, that can genuinely save time. After user feedback, all the old functionality is right there, all it requires is the selection of two preference tick-boxes (that remember their state, one to ask before closing a document whether to keep or discard changes, the other to automatically revert the parent document to the old state when creating a new one using "save as") and holding down the option key when making a "save as". Seems just about optimal to me: new features are there, old functionality is available at minimal effort if still desired. Robin
