Yep. I just use a simple AppleWorks spreadsheet. :-) MANY years ago when I was looking at various Macintosh accounts software for the organisation I worked at, they were all awful, ugly, slow, mostly Windows PC ports, and were highly Americanised. In the end we were given a free version of the (then new) MoneyWorks application by a local developer and were one of the beta testers for them.

And now I don't use anything. Every other Thursday is payday. I sit
down, pay 1/26 of the annual average of everything rounded up to the
next dollar. Whenever I get a bill where what they owe me is over a
hundred, I skip a payment.
All the years I put so much effort into keeping track of how much it is
this month and when is it due, etc. I now see was unnecessary. This
way is easy.
I do scan the details each payday for any inappropriate trasnactions.
But if the bank is stealing small amounts from me by arithmetic errors,
I don't know and don't care.

the release of MS-DOS.

I also use a FileMaker database to print the invoices. For my personal accounts I don't use anything. I pay for almost everything with a credit card and then pay that bill off completely every month. :-)

And if I had files (as some have posted) that can only be opened by PPC
code, I'd have long ago figured out a way to convert them to something else.

All it is is recipes? No matter how good they are, I can't imagine that
NONE of the millions available on line aren't close enough.

My wife has over a thousand *family* recipes in our "family" cookbook in Mangia. Or maybe it's two thousand -- they fit in two 3" thick notebooks. Do you want estimate how much time it would take to cut and paste those and reformat them in the form required by some other cookbook program?

It might be possible to pull the data out of the Mangia documents, but a very quick Google search seems to indicate nobody else has managed to do it. The "best" approach seems to be to print the recipes ot a PostScript or PDF file and then extract the text from that. http://www.advenio.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=114%5Burl%5D Depending on how Mangia prints the recipes, it should be possible to get the computer to batch convert, but apparently the people on that topic link haven't managed to do it. They say to use the MacGourmet application, but that may end up with the same issue when we reach Mac OS X 10.18 or something. It would probably be more sensible to simply use a standard word processor like Word.

Or a standard DB app to better support searching.
Or a sharing service like BigOven.com which has both free and non-free
versions and which also has competitors, though I don't remember their
names.

That would be better than a cusom database like MacGourmet, but it still has issues if the database maker decides to stop making it (or if the user switches from Windows to Mac if using Access) ... although any good database will allow you to easily export the data to then import on another piece of software. Using a widely used word processor like Word does give you somewhat better chances of "future proofing" ... Word can still opens up documents from the early versions, even though it now has the silly .docx version. Obviously at some stage Word might disappear, Microsoft go bankrupt or somthing, but almost every other word processor on the planet can also open Word documents. > Or a sharing service like BigOven.com which has both free and non-free > versions and which also has competitors, though I don't remember their > names. There are lots, and millions of recipe sharing websites out there, but your again stuck with whether or not the website owners decided to keep it going or not. :-)

Any good database will do SQL or something similar.
So in the worst case, you could get delimited dumps that could be
converted to just about anything.

But only if you can still run the original database software. If the old application won't run on your new computer, then you're stuck ... which is the same issue with Mangia. For example, if FilMaker 27 won't run on Mac OS X 10.30, then you can't get at any of the data in those database files. A simple Word document on the other hand will still be openable by various still functioning applications for many years after Word / Microsoft disappeared.

No, but I will estimate that it's not a good idea to put all of one's eggs in one basket. Or to use superfluous software such as "cookbook programs" when text files are more versatile, more durable and just as easy to search. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

Rosetta is not an emulator. It translates PowerPC code into Intel code, which then gets executed. All of the code executed by the process must be PowerPC, including libraries and frameworks used by the application, since PowerPC and Intel-native code have different calling conventions. In order for someone other than Apple to implement a Rosetta clone, they need to be able to supply PowerPC implementations of all parts of Mac OS X which can be executed within the process of a PowerPC application, which is a rather big list including all of the libraries and frameworks that are used by applications. Apple eliminated all of the PowerPC versions of their libraries and frameworks when they dropped Rosetta with Lion. Nobody else has the source code to those parts of Mac OS X, so the chance of someone else implementing a drop-in replacement for Rosetta is effectively zero. (That's without even considering the patent issues for the technology behind Rosetta, which is now owned by IBM.) SheepShaver does more than just emulate a PowerPC: it runs a complete copy of the older operating system as well. You can do the equivalent by running Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine (VMware Fusion, Parallels or VirtualBox), and can run PowerPC applications in that. Snow Leopard Server used to be expensive, but Apple dropped the price to be the same as Snow Leopard (you can get it by ringing Apple Sales, but it doesn't appear on the online store). -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
