No, I understand your point, I'm just not sure if it is right.

I think Apple's success in the phone/mp3 player/tablet market has been
a combination of three things:

1) a good product.
2) good marketing.
3) price competiveness [it has proven hard to undercut these products
at similar feature levels].

It is this third thing that I question in the camera business; partly
because the feature levels are not something people judge very well in
cameras (megapixels rule, optics quality not so much).

Apple will (if they do this) probably make a good camera with
excellent optics for the money and great ease of use features. But if
someone is selling a camera with more megapixels and shabbier optics
(or with worse noise-reduction software, or with a smaller sensor) for
$100 less, I think consumers aren't going to discriminate on the
optics, noise reduction or sensor size but will discriminate on price.

And that's why Apple will ram it down the throats of consumers.

In reply -
   1) It will be a good product.
   2) Good marketing. Are you kidding? Fire up the RDF.
   3) Apple's partner in crime (foxxcon) will be able to make such a
camera at an unprecedented low cost level.

Not after the RDF shows them in commercial after commercial that the
Apple phone at any resolution is what you need.

You mean Apple camera.

As far as the so-called RDF, we'll see. I don't really believe in it.

Enough people are convinced that iPhones are better than comparably
priced smartphones with a similar feature set and a clumsier interface
so that iPhones have a big smart-phone market share.

Enough people are convinced that iPads are better than comparably
priced tablets with poorer feature sets, clumsier interfaces and a
small fraction of the available applications so that iPads have a huge
tablet market share.

The situation was similar with iPods.

But not with PCs, which may be more analogous. Macs have been
comparably priced to PCs with similar specs. But PCs seem to compete
on processor speed (or in the case of laptops, processor speed and
screen size). There are always PCs that are cheaper than Macs with
comparable processor speed, and than Apple laptops with comparable
processor speed and screensize.

But Macs don't dominate the PC market. They are big, but not
dominant, and I think they've reached the market share they have via
providing an alternative user experience that many people prefer. Can
that be done with cameras? I don't know.

Apple is too savvy to compete in the DSLR market.

They will likely partner with Nikon or Canon and offer a camera tightly
integrated to ICloud and the whole ease of sharing concept.

Such a camera would use wireless communication, be small, and very
responsive. It will sell like crazy. Very high resolution is not required
and actually not a good idea.

The total integration along with the expected Apple easy to use concept
along with a fast camera (response time) will make it an instant winner.

Apple was in the digital camera business a long time ago. It's time for
them to step back in.

They won't partner. If it's to be, it will be an Apple camera. The
other co's would be suppliers to them of optics and sensors.

In that sense, Carl Zeiss for design and Sony, Tamprom or Cosina,
perhaps Fujifilm for lens manufacturing.

Looking at it from a different eye, thsi could be possible. A special
Nikon camera with the Apple logo on it, comarketed by both. Nikon builds
the camera, Apple provides the integration software and interfaces.
Apple markets it like mad and sells those special Nikon cameras in its
stores, and those cameras are also sold at all current Nikon outlets as
well.

I could see Apple partnering with mobile networks to give affordable
data plans for picture uploading to icloud from an Apple iCamera. (or
iShoot ?)

And Apple might even get a percentage of the data revenues, at which
point Apple has penty of incentives to get people to use their
iShoot/iCamera as often as possible :-)

HP may have printers that force people to spend on ink, and Apple would
have the cameras that forces people to spend on mobile service :-)

Note that Kodak is seeking buyers for its IP. I wonder if there are
patents in there that would benefit Apple should it want to enter the
camera business.

According to one report I read, the currently interested parties are
bidding very low because they know Kodak doesn't have much bargaining
power. That raises the possibility of someone else grabbing the patent
portfolio at a much better price for Kodak, yet still relatively cheap.

No need in the USA, our carriers are transitioning to shared data plans
where you but a bucket of data for $X, and add devices to the plan for $Y
each, much like voice plans for families. I think Verizon allows up to
10 devices to share a plan. But there's a better way, IMO, which
enforces Apple brand-loyalty, which I'll get to below.

> And Apple might even get a percentage of the data revenues, at which

Not a significant amount of revenue, unless Apple were to go the MVNO
route and become their own service provider.

> HP may have printers that force people to spend on ink, and Apple would
> have the cameras that forces people to spend on mobile service :-)

HP sells, and profits from, that ink. Apple wouldn't really be profitting
from the data. The iShoot would have more of an iPod revenue stream-
profit at point of sale, and ancillary revenue from apps later. Without
music, and with the apps probably limited (by the owner's preferences) to
photo apps, its ancillary revenue would even be less.

> Note that Kodak is seeking buyers for its IP. I wonder if there are

What might help sell an Apple camera would be an easy, automatic, (and
most importantly for Apple, proprietary) wireless camera to iPhone
transfer mechanism.

In the "real world" this could be set up via bluetooth or WiFi, like an
EyeFi card, but that takes time and effort to configure and set up
properly. Apple could build functionality into the OS that whenever your
camera and phone (or iTunes-equipped computer) were in a WiFi range,
photos would automatically upload to iCloud/Photostream via the iPhone's
or data connection (or imported into iTunes and then uploaded.) Sort of
like a very specific version of EyeFi, that needed no configuration other
than signing into the camera with the same Apple ID.

Unlike EyeFi, which is an add-on kludge, this would be seamlessly
integrated into the camera, and could use any known WiFi network, or the
user's iPhone.

Few would subscribe. They're already paying too much for cell and data
with their smartphones. Few people get data plans for their iPad for
that reason. A camera? Even less.

But, when in range of free WiFi that would be another matter.

Nikon's total sales are less than $10B. And a lot of that has nothing
to with P&S and DSLR cameras. Nikon is an afterthought where Apple is
concerned. Same with Canon.

There won't be a co-branded phone. There is Apple and all the rest.

Further, there is:

Apple no longer does "co-marketed" or "rebadged" devices. The design and

I attended a lecture by a professional photographer who has released
books of his photos who said he was taking more photos with his 4S
then with his DSLR. Most of it was because of convenience (having the
4S with him all the time and opportunities came up and he didn't want
to grab his DSLR out of his car). But he thought it was good enough
for most of his picture taking. He still used his DSLRs for
professional shoots most of the time.

The few times I have used my 4S the picture was fine, but the lack of
an optical zoom hurt. I still prefer my Nikon if I have it with me.
