#55656 — Wifi/Ethernet

FromWilbur Eleven <wil@nowhere.at.all.ru.ca.fr.uk.us>
Date2014-01-31 10:16 -0500
SubjectWifi/Ethernet
Message-ID<lcgeoa$rfs$1@news.mixmin.net>
Older MacBook Pro, 10.9.1

In System Prefs, Network, the wired connection is on "Ethernet 1" and
the wireless connection is on "Ethernet 2" and the "WiFi" is greyed out
and they both work as expected except sometimes I hear a buzzing from
just below the power button which is coincidentally just above the
ethernet port and then everything freezes.

Hardware problem? I had the machine fixed some time ago. Do you think
the guy wired up my networking badly?

--

Fine then, I'm drinking coffee and rolling cigarettes and looking
out at the hot baked street and a lady just walked by wiggling it
in tight white pants, and we are not dead yet.

Sorry about the double posts. MTNW is on its last legs.

I didn't think that MTNW would work at all in 10.9.

It doesn't -- I use it in 10.7.5 on an older Mac Pro that "can't be
upgraded." My laptop and iMac are Mavericks.

In that case, why is it on its last legs? It still works just as well as
it always has in the older OS. I'm still using it in 10.6.8 with no
problems.

I'm just used to its buggy nature. It quite frequently freezes when I
quit, and sometimes it just "goes away" for no apparent reason.
Sometimes it refuses to send a message out without telling me. And so
on. It's still the only Usenet client I use regularly (I'm not averse to
firing up Gnus on my Linux thing).

I just keep seeing more and more reasons to avoid Mavericks 8-)

I see an enormous amount of trouble and expense as a result of being
blocked from using almost every software program I currently use as well
as every document and many graphics produced over the years since my
first computer, many of which still ARE usable and reachable. That's
what I see, whether I want to or not.

What do you see as being problematic, other than MTNW?

Oh, that's just the latest boggle. I play with graphics a lot, and it
would wipe out my main editing program and force me to buy something
strange and expensive I'd need to learn to use from scratch, which would
hurt the most. There are many smaller nastinesses as well.

Most of those went away when Classic and then Rosetta went away -- and
that was long before Mavericks.

Once upon a time Apple programs were backward compatible, so it wasn't
necessary to update all my data every time the OS climbed to a new
number.

Oh yea, I rememebr how eeasy it was to open Appleworks files from my
//c+ on the Mac. Oh wait.

Well, yeah, but Mac Write files from System 1.x worked great in System
7-- oh, right, no they didn't.

Word 6 worked really well with older versions of Word if by 'really
well' you mean 'not at all' and you had to buy a third-party conversion
tool.

Wait, when was this mythical backwards compatibility period when prices
were low and politicians were honest and the summers were long and it
always snowed on Christmas Eve?

It was pretty easy with Apple File Exchange. The IIc Plus had an 800 k DS
drive.

There is a game called Missile Command. It was written in 1984. It will run
on every model of Macintosh and every classic Mac OS System up to 9.2.

As I recall, you didn't open your old AppleWorks files, you converted
them, one-way, to the new format.

And stack that up against thousands and thousands of programs that broke
with System 6, System 7, System 7.1, System 7.5, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9, OS
X 10.0, 10.1, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7.

I can still open them with Pages as long as they were originally saved
as WP. Pages can't open anything else because of its limitations,
unlike every version of ClarisWorks and AppleWorks. It can't even make
calendars, which I still need AW for if I want to make them the size I
want them.

Pre OS 10.6

I still have a couple games on the old computer, which is 9.2.2.
It's also the only one that can open my interactive Bayeux Tapestry DVD.

No, most of them broke with OSX and they keep breaking as the numbers
after OS X mount up.

You're talking about very different versions of AppleWorks. The version
for the Apple // series was almost nothing like the later version for
the Mac, other than in name.

>> >> Wait, when was this mythical backwards compatibility period when prices

Facts do not bare that out. I remember many many programs breaking with
System 7 and many more with System 7.5 and many more with Mac OS 8.0. A
lot broke with 10.3 (but very few with 10.0-10.2), and a lot again with
10.5.

With Mac OS 8 (originally System 7.7) I was on the beta team and of the
hundred or so bugs I filed nearly all of them where "program x crashes
on launch" or "program y crashes when you try to print" sorts of bugs.

Again, the facts do not back you up.

Oh, I was using ClarisWorks almost from its inception, I think. By the
time I had to switch to AW, it soon came in a version for both OS 9 and
OSX and could open older AW and CW files. Pages cut its abilities in
half and threw in useless "templates" , threw out useful ones and most
individual options. I don't remember what I was using on the Apple //e.
