I was reading at article last week outlining all of the problems a widow
had when her husband died getting into his various accounts because of
not knowing the usernames, passwords, and security questions. I am
thinking about putting this information (for both of us) on encrypted
thumb drives and putting them in the safety deposit boxes with the
wills. I would like to d/l the usernames/passwords from Keychain access.
I can then fill in the blanks of the few accounts that aren't on
Keychain and work out the security questions.
So, is this a good idea or dumb idea? Needed or unneeded? If good idea
what file or plist or whatever do I need to d/l?

In Québec, the only will that counts is the one stored at a central faciity, registered by a notary. So when someone dies, you get a notarized/stapmped copy of the will from the notary who gets it from the the central database. (notaries used to keep the wills in their safes, but became huge hassle when notaries retired and handed stuff to some other notary) So the thumb drive with the will idea would not work. However, the thumb drive in safety deposit box works if the will specifies that passwords are stored on thumb drive in SDB at bank X with the key hidden at X in house.

And that's why no one wants to live in Quebec. In the real world, your will can be stored anywhere (hopefully where someone knows where it is). It can even be handwritten, following certain rules. A letter to one's executor can contain the passwords and so on, or just a note saying "the treasure's buried in the arb..arg..cou..[NO CARRIER]." The Quebec government is in the process of tabling legislation that would make it a "hate crime" to criticise a political party. Look it up. They're also passing legislation that says "we don't want any religious symbols except, you know, the cross is okay else the Pope of Rome might get annoyed." Gotta wonder. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. Having a single authenticated copy of a will in a central registry is a very good idea. The notary can produce the OFFICIAL will as it was registered. And the certified copy is the only one banks and other companies accept. If the executor shows up without 1-death certificate 2-certified copy of will, the banks will not let him "execute". Same thing with notaries when it comes to transfering deeds such as homes or cars.

Only that apparently a will in Quebec has to be stored by an official, who probably doesn't want or can't have extra rubbish like thumb drives clogging up the place. You could of course still keep the thumb drive somewhere safe yourself, just not with the actual will.

The question was about the thumb drive, the will was apparently just mentioned in passing. The original message had the thumb drive stored with the will. I pointed out that here, the will is stored in a central location (operated by notary association), so you can't store a thumb drive with it.

The OP had the thumb drive stored in the safety deposit box, and it also had the will stored there. The latter point seemed like a FYI, not relevant to the question. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

Okay. Better idea. Now, the question becomes can I print out a list from
Keychain or do I need to do it by hand?

It's probably easier to write it all out by hand. Use a ball point pen
with real ink, coz some of the felt tip or similar pens will fade after
a few years.

I have really bad handwriting so it may not be easier. ;) In real life
I most likely would have to go back and forth between the Keychain' s
listing and Word to get something that could actually be read.

You could probably write a script to create a CSV file (just a text file with contents that conform to CSV) that I could open with any spreadsheet program to view. The script would just loop through all keys in each key chain, and write every key as a line in the CSV file. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Bugger that, too much like work. Why not just open Keychain and take
a picture, then print the picture? OSX comes with Grab. Grab lets you
store the screen captures. Stored files can be printed.
On Windows boxes one can use IrfanView. Or the PrintScreen.
On *Nixxy boxes there are about fifty million ways to print off a
screen, as there are with everything you would ever need to do.
That way, if anything every changes, all you need do is more
print-offs.
You can even "show passwords" in Firefox and other browsers when
looking at locally stored logins for things like Gmail accounts that
you access through a browser. That screen, too, can be dumped to a
printer.

Yeah, me, too, once, a long, long time ago. Getting the job done
would not be a massive task but it's work I wouldn't bother doing as
Apple have kindly produced and installed about a dozen different ways
of doing the job with a few keystrokes.
I'm sure Microsoft and the million or so *Nixxy distros have also do
so. :)
But if you're happy to write more ways to do it, and if that's fun
for you, that's good, too. :)

Writing such a script would take around 15 minutes of work and would allow me to export the data in any format I want, rather than being stuck with less useful screen shots and so on. > Apple have kindly produced and installed about a dozen different ways > of doing the job with a few keystrokes. If Apple gives you a way to do that without scripting, please share. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Keychain Access doesn't have a screen that shows all the passwords. You'd have to open each password entry, click on "Show Password", enter your login password to reveal it, then take a picture of that. THAT would be lots of work, probably 20-30 seconds per site. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***
