UPS just delivered the iMac and I got it set up. It had 10.6.8 on it,
but I immediately upgraded to OSX 10.10.2. Authorized it for my iTunes
account from old G4, downloaded my tunes that I had purchased(they are
now in the cloud) and so far so good. Too bad it is not really an
Internet machine, no NNTP reader(followed the thread), Adobe Reader did
not come on the machine(should I download it?), and I did not want to
enable Mail, as I use Gmail and would prefer the web interface on the iMac
(read the mail.app thread of problems).
It is a beautiful machine. Put my old G4 away in the closet, don't even
need the round digital speakers anymore. Using my old, yellowed iMac
keyboard and the single point mouse, both came with the G4.
It even found my Brother wireless printer located in the living room with
no problem.
Now, if I can just find Sarah Lane?

Preview comes with OS X, and it covers almost all need for viewing PDFs.

The only area I've encountered where Preview isn't sufficient is filling
in PDF forms. I have Adobe Reader for that, but I use it less often than
it gets updated by Adobe.

David, question. Will I need to buy the last iLife package, iLife 11? I
have tons of old photos on my G4, all in iPhoto format.

There is surely no such thing as iPhoto format. If you drag a picture
off an iPhoto gallery page (to, say, the desktop, you will find it is
a familiar format like jpg).

No, you've upgraded to Yosemite, therefore you can get the current
version of iPhoto for free using App Store.

As I said previously, because your existing version of iPhoto is
considerably older, you will also need a utility to update your existing
iPhoto library before it can be opened by the current version.

It's a fine internet machine.

Put Chrome on it if you dislike Safari.

Put Thunderbird on it for usenet if there are no other satisfying
newsreaders.

Sure DL and install Adobe Reader.

Use Apple Mail with GMail (POP or IMAP as you see fit). The problems
occur, but sorted out, it works fine.

Seek, ...

Also, get an external drive and enable Time Machine.

Not sure what that means. It's a fine internet machine.

There are several options. slrn works fine for me.

OS X has PDF built in. Preview will display PDFs just fine. I haven't
needed Reader in ages.

I haven't had any problems with GMail in Apple Mail here for the past
few years. But then I tend not to refrain from trying shit just because
other people say it doesn't work for them. I prefer to see for myself.

Apple Mail sure has come a long way since 10.2/10.4! I opened it, it
found all the GMail settings and is working fine! The interface is
certainly better!
If I do not need Adobe Reader, then I can forget it, it was a real pain
anyway.
Guess that I will use Thunderbird for reading NNTP groups, even though it
is pretty clunky. I do not even use slrn/tin on Linux, preferring Pan.
Will Pan install on iMac?
Another question: will my old Super Duper transfer over to the new iMac,
or will I have to download and purchase a new copy? Also, if I use my
LaCie 350gig backup hdd in the firewire port, will it synch with Time
Machine, or will all the old PPC stuff conflict?

It's possible you can compile it. It looks like it's available from
MacPorts for the lazies:

<https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/news/pan2/Portfile>

I would just install the latest version and register it with the same
registration information.

If you've already migrated everything to the new machine, why not just
erase the drive and start fresh with a new Time Machine backup?

JR,
I did not migrate all the stuff from the PPC drive. I wanted to have it
totally clean. The only stuff that I really wanted was the iTunes, which
I downloaded from Apple(thank God they allow that!), the Super Duper
(which you now told me to download the Intel version and use the old
registration number), and Thoth(which may/may not work on Intel, it is
version 1.8). The rest of the stuff was crap, like Apple Works and other
stuff that came from upgrading from 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4.11.
I just spent the last hour transferring all my old iPhotos from CD and USB
stick to the new 10.10.2 version of iPhoto. Thanks to David Empson, he
told me about the iPhoto upgrade tool to allow old format iPhotos to load
and be compatible with the newest version.
Could I just wipe the LaCie drive, it is 350gigs, and just start clean?
Will it be compatible with Time Machine? If so, then I will go that
route. So far, this new iMac is a gem, so unlike the old G4, less
cartoony and so much faster!!!
Thanks for all your advice and help, along with others, I very much
appreciate the help.

Disk utility (generally the same as the PPC version) will do that for
you, yes.

And you can use journaled, encrypted so that when, one day, the disk is
no longer useful, there is no need to do anything other than losing the
encryption key (password) to ensure privacy (delete it from the
keychain, lose the password and that disk is pretty much random numbers).

(You can "FileVault" your system drive too).
