#71923 — Macbook Air Battery replacement - genius bar?

SubjectMacbook Air Battery replacement - genius bar?
Message-ID<MPG.2f7a1c1f7ccea0f2989885@news.individual.net>
Hi anyone know if I can just expect a batery replacement (not a warranty
claim) to be performed (of course expect to pay!) at a pre-booked genius
bar appointment? Or will they just look at it and determine if they feel
it needs a new battery and then send it away?

Really want this to be done in person while I wait.

I'm pretty sure they can do that there, but you will have to wait, and
it may be on their schedule rather than yours. I'd just call and ask.

That was the first thing I did - called the local branch (this is in the
UK) but found myself in some voice-recognition menu system which didn't
enable me to speak to anyone (got directed to a "buy a single incident
support service for 25 quid") - may have picked some wrong option
however didn't want to try it for 2nd time so simply booked a slot
online and added commnts that I want a battery replacement.

It's pretty easy to get to an actual person here in the U.S. Maybe
things are done differently over there.

It all depends on how old your system is. A friend took his MacBook
onto the Apple Store to the Genius Bar and was told they no longer carry
batteries for "legacy systems". I forget what their rule is but I
imagine if Apple still sells it on the web site, they carry the battery.
If they don't you'll have to go third party, buy it and replace it
yourself.

It's a 2012 summer model Macbook Air 13" - and as far as I am aware the
batteries are not supposed to be end-user serviceable.

they're not, but it's not that hard to do. visit ifixit.com for details.

however, since it's not that old, there is the possibility that apple
may replace it for no cost.

so it is user servicable but depends on the user
probably not the typical aapple user

interesting how does aapple decide on that
is it strictly an age thing or is there a group of serial numbers
that will get a free replacement

this would be good info when looking for a used air

if it's defective, it gets replaced. if it's normal wear & tear, it
doesn't.

far as I know there's no such thing as normal wear/tear
the batteries have a fixed lifetime that is not related to number of
charge/discharges so if the battery doesn't hold a charge and it
still should, based upon it's date of manufacture, it's defective

sounds like the batts are either manufacturing defects or aapple
used batts manufactured too long ago and are therefore dead as
designed

has anyone checked the batt dates

Because it would be a pretty stupid thing to do, and Apple would be
found out if they did it. Apple aren't stupid, and I haven't heard
anybody[1] seriously suggesting that they are selling new laptops with old
batteries.

You should also look at the previous messages in this thread to see
exactly what I responded to - the first was "Electric Comet"'s statement
that battery lifetime is unrelated to use (which is untrue); the second
was his conclusion that, since he was wrong on that, Apple must be
selling new laptops with old batteries.

Facts and logic do not seem to be strong points with "Electric Comet".

Footnotes:
[1] Except for "Electric Comet".

It depends on your definition of "new". Resellers may well sell a
laptop that has been sitting on the shelf for a while as "new" (since
it has never been opened or used), but the battery will still have been
degrading while it has been sitting there and could be quite old.

*BUT* that's pretty unlikely from Apple since they don't tend to keep a
lot of stock sitting around. It might happen with a "refurbished"
laptop, but then that isn't "new".

He [Carrot] could lead armies, Angua thought. He really could. Some
people have inspired whole countries to great deeds because of the power
of their vision. And so could he. Not because he dreams about marching
hordes, or world domination, or an empire of a thousand years. Just
because he thinks that everyone's really decent underneath and would get
along just fine if only they made an effort, and he believes that
strongly it burns like a flame that is bigger than he is.

So you don't actually know. You could have just said that instead of

Apple is clearly content to let its software quality decline gradually
- why would it be unfair to assume the same about their hardware?
Especially something that is expected to wear out anyway, and could
lead to more sales in the future as a person simply replaces their

Sorry, but you'll need to provide evidence of a decline in quality
before we'll just swallow that load. Given that there have been quality
issues with Apple's software releases ever since I can remember, I won't
hold my breath.
