The whole idea of installing a new operating system is to insure your OS
is free of nasties that someone else may have put there. Purchasing some
thumb drive some stranger created isn't going to help there. Just
purchase it from Apple directly.

Amazon has the original Lion thumb drive, as does ebay. I would not
trust somebody's homemade thumbdrive. I will admit that the only
"pirated" OS that I ever had was when several teachers in my school made
us copies of W2K Professional to have on our home computers to match the
school computers! He also provided us with a copy of Microsoft Office
2000. Seems like every teacher in the school had done the same thing,
even the principal did not care! It did allow me to run the gradebook
app at home and not have to be at my classroom computer!

Personally, I'd skip Lion (10.7) and go straight to Yosemite (10.10)
since a lot of problems in Lion and Mountain Lion, and even Mavericks,
are solved in Yosemite.

I have read that Lion/Mt.Lion were transitional years, and even Mavericks
was not that stable.
Was Tiger the "best" version? I have heard that from several sources,
that is the version that my old iMac G4 has, 10.4.11!
Should I just stay with what comes on the machine(Snow Leopard 10.6.x)?

In my experience, most people consider that Snow Leopard was the best
version of OS X to date.

Those who continue running Snow Leopard at this point are likely to fall
into one of these camps:

(a) Have essential PowerPC-only applications, which won't run in later
versions because the Rosetta code translation mechanism was dropped in
Lion, and they either don't want to upgrade the apps or some have been
discontinued and they don't want to change to something else.

(b) The Mac in question is an early Intel model which cannot upgrade
further. (All Early 2006 models, some Mid to Late 2006 models.)

(c) The Mac in question is a slightly newer Intel model which could
upgrade to Lion but not to Mountain Lion or later, and Lion is really
not worth it. (Late 2006 to some models as recent as Late 2008.)

(d) Don't like changes in later versions.

(e) Generally reluctant to upgrade the OS.

I was in group (a) for several months after Lion was released, because I
was using Eudora as my mail client and was reluctant to switch to
something else. I eventually got over it and upgraded to Lion about ten
months after Lion was released, and upgraded promptly to each subsequent
version.

As you still have an older PowerPC iMac, (a) shouldn't apply to you
unless you want to keep everything on the same computer. Even then,
running Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine on a later OS X version
is a reasonable solution for occasionally running old applications. I
use this method to run things like old versions of FileMaker or
AppleWorks once in a blue moon.

The main argument against continuing to run Snow Leopard now is that it
is becoming obsolete: its last security and Safari updates were in late
2013, and its last iTunes update was in late 2014, which means iTunes on
Snow Leopard won't be able to operate with iOS devices running iOS 9
later this year.

At present, third party web browsers (e.g. Firefox and Chrome) still
support Snow Leopard, as does Adobe Flash, but the question is how much
longer that will continue. Based on when they stopped supporting
Leopard, I'm expecting at least some of them will drop Snow Leopard
support this year.

Other third party applications vary, but many have already moved on to
requiring a later version of OS X. As far as I know, the current version
of all of Apple's applications require a later OS X version (most
require Yosemite, a few still support Mavericks, a very few still
support Mountain Lion or Lion).

If your iMac is not being used for web access, and you don't have any
iOS devices, and the main function will be to run iTunes, then Snow
Leopard may be a reasonable choice in your case.

At a minimum, you should get Yosemite from the App Store, even if you
don't install it now (you can cancel the download, or quit the installer
if you let it finish downloading). Based on the pattern with Mavericks,
once the next OS X version is released, you won't be able to get
Yosemite if you didn't get it while it was available. You will be able
to download Yosemite later if it is already in your Purchases list.

You can also download and keep a copy of the Yosemite installer in case
you need it later, preferably on an external drive, since a 5 GB file
would be a significant chunk of your internal 160 GB drive.

Yep. Lots of the bugs introduced in those versions have been fixed in
Yosemite.

I'd go straight to Yosemite. But if you are trying to avoid that for
some strange reason, I'd stick with 10.6.

I'd like to, but 10.6 hasn't been supported for too long. <sigh>
Core 2 duo machine can be pretty peppy with Snow Leopard.

Just make sure that the older iMac can actually use the newer versions
of OS X before potentially wasting money buying them.

The model will run the latest OS according to http://www.everymac.com/

His iMac is circa 2009, and any iMac Mid-2007 or newer will run
Yosemite, according to Apple.

This is a very weird model, being an educational model. It is branded as
being "late 2009", but according to everymac.com, it was not produced
until 2010, with production ending in 2012.
Why would this model be listed as being a year older?

Because that's when Apple released it as an Educational model (possibly
even a re-release of an older version with slight tweaks) - it may well
be almost the same as the 2009 model, but been lower-end than the other
models being sold in 2010. There have been a few Educational models
over the years that the general public weren't able to buy.

Educational/institutional models are weird. This one that I bought, has
no bluetooth, guess that they did not want students mucking about with
their cell phones or something! I have never had a need for bluetooth on
any of my other computers, all of them running Scientific Linux 6.6(which
has bluetooth). I do not use my phone to "pair" with the computer. If I
want to transfer things, like photos, I use usb cables. I just recently
got my first "smartphone", a Motorola Moto E, not a high end job. I was
using a Pantech Breeze II flip phone and getting along well enough, but
my wife has had a Motorola Atrix for several years and wanted me to use
texting, which was a real bitch on that flip phone!

With Macs, Bluetooth provides way more functionality than just
transferring files. Lots of Continuity functionality is enabled by
Bluetooth for instance:

<https://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/continuity/>

AirDrop is built on top of Bluetooth as well:

<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202267>

The list goes on...

There is limited verifiable information about your model, because its
release wasn't publicised. Everymac may have some details wrong, and if
it was advertised to you as a "Late 2009" that may be misleading because
the Late 2009 retail iMac is quite a different beast.

Describing it as a "Mid 2009" is reasonable, because it is identical to
the originally released Mid 2009 model, apart from a slightly faster
processor. It will have the same model identifier as that model, which
means that when a future OS X version drops support for the original Mid
2009 iMac, your slightly faster one will also stop being supported.

It should be possible to contact Apple Sales to order a replacement set
of the original DVDs which came with the computer. Given that it was
introduced in 2010, it should have a pair of DVDs, one with Snow Leopard
and the other with the bundled iLife '09 applications. This will not be
free.

A possible complication is that this is an education-only model, and
they might not be willing to supply the discs unless you are an
educational institution.

Another option is to buy a retail Snow Leopard DVD, which is still
available from the Apple online store for US$19.99:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

That will give you the most important bit. It won't give you the
hardware test software (only on the bundled DVD), nor the iLife '09
installer (which you could probably get through a remarketing source or
ebay if you really wanted that version - I'd suggest getting iLife '11
instead).

Thank you, I asked this question to you in an earlier post, so please
disregard that! I asked about the same stuff you answered here, so I

A friend of mine had a 10.5 machine that he wanted to update to 10.7.
When he called Apple they sent him an install DVD of 10.6.3 so he could
update to 10.6.8 so he could buy 10.7. They did not charge him for the
DVD even though the 10.6.3 installer is normally $20. I think the key
was "I want to update to 10.7".

Nah, you purchase Yosemite from the App Store (from the Apple menu), and
you install it that way:

<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475>

> Are these easy to open up and blow the dust out?

I should have made that clear. Sorry. No iMac is "easy" to open for the
average user. I've worked on enough computers that it's not something
I'd shy away from, though. You'll need to have some skill and patience
to do it.

It looks like you have the Core 2 Duo iMac 2.26 GHz (Mid-2009) model:

<http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.26-20-inch-aluminum-mid-2009-education-specs.html>

Here's the iFixit tear down, showing what is involved:

<https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Intel+20-Inch+EMC+2266+Teardown/658>

If it looks like too much for you, you probably shouldn't mess with it.
There will likely be some dust buildup inside of the machine, but it
won't cause catastrophic problems if you leave it be.

OMG! That is WAY too much for me! I am used to the old IBM PS/2 or
other clones that take the entire case cover off with only pressing the
side buttons or taking off a few Phillips screws!
I would hope that during the refurb process, they did clean out or blow
out the machine. They give a 90 day free warranty, with additional 1 and
2 year warranties available.
