As I understand it, it uses CUPS, which Apple owns.

Although it is Open Source and used widely by other Unix based O/S's.

Yes. And it's even a pain in the ass for servers, due to the nature of
open source, where problems often result in cryptic errors written by
teenage open source developers. One example (out of many I have
encountered in my career) is a version of rsync in a production RHEL
installation where the only error generated was literally:

You don't exist, go away!
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far)
[sender]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(463) [sender=2.6.8]

We encountered this error, of all times, during automated deployment of
code to a production server. *clap* *clap* *clap* Thanks so much! Well
done, sirs! You just gotta love when Linux developers insert witty,
cryptic, unhelpful error messages into their code, offering no
assistance what-so-ever in determining what actually went wrong so you
have to go read source code while you are working on mission-critical
server infrastructure. Really productive use of time there.

That particular message is (probably) not from rsync, and it existed in
BSD Unix (I think) well before Linux appeared. Not something to blame
Linux-hacking teenagers for :-)

In this case that may be true, but it was just one example I pulled from
memory. There are *many* others. No offense, but I'm not going to go
through the trouble of remembering them or digging through emails to
find them just to prove something to you. Linux is chock full of such
issues, and worse. And administrators and developers alike who have
significant experience know it well. Take it or leave it for all I care.

Did installing macsox server save the day then? Or were you able

This was on a Dell rack server? So, no.

Of course we fixed the issue quickly. That's why they pay us the big
bucks. It's also besides the point. Get a clue.

Everybody hates a tourist, especially one who thinks it's all such
laugh. Yeah, and the chip stains and grease will come out in the bath.
You will never understand how it feels to live your life with no meaning
or control, and with nowhere left to go. You are amazed that the exist,
and they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why.
