OK. So? The original author to whom I replied was concerned that there wasn't an adapter available... ...not that it wasn't free. "The problem (until someone makes a double adapter) could be charging the laptop while using an external USB drive, for example." Perhaps that explains why you chose to snip that out... Just a thought. :-)

Yep. It really is inevitable. There will always be those who will resist changes like this, usually kicking and screaming the whole way through, just as they did with floppies, serial/parallel ports, CD/DVD drives, and so on. And at some point in the future, when cables are largely a thing of the past, the rest of us will look back on this too with a chuckle and grin. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I roll with the punches. But when Apple takes away something that I need, I want a replacement. A dongle in a single Thunderbolt port is not a satisfactory replacement for two FireWire ports. A blank spot is not a replacement for Ethernet. Apple's server farms use Ethernet ports, still the world standard, but I don't suppose they're using Apple-brand servers. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

Had to look up the tech specs.
Headphone port
Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
During the keynote, I was under the impression Cook mentioned "Beats"
headphones being wireless along with everything else. may have misheard.
Still think they should have had Magsafe and USB-C ports, both that
could be used for charging.

Depends on whether widgets that plufg in USB-C will become avaialble to regain lost connector ports such as audio, ethernet etc. Replacement for SD-Card slot via US-C is likely first to come. But for ithers, i am not sure. Note that Apple has updated the 13" MacBookPro, so that product seems to still be alive for now. Of note here is whether thunderbolt has a future or not. Looks like "not" to me. Apple has tried a number of protocols over the years like firewire that didn't catch on. But for some, Apple was a leader (like SCSI, USB).

The bit you quoted is talking about the new 12-inch MacBook, not the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Apple also announced (briefly) new 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro models. They have updated processors, the Air gains Thunderbolt 2, and the Pro gains the force touch trackpad. Apart from those changes, they look exactly the same and have the same connectors as before. The new 12-inch MacBook is for those who want an ultraportable machine and don't need a lot of physical devices connected. I fully expect Apple to continue selling the MacBook Pro with a wider range of connectors, for those who need them. The MacBook Air (with slightly fewer connectors) also continues to be available. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
