| Subject | Question on MBPro |
| Message-ID | <0OOdnQv607OJeWDJnZ2dnUU7-fGdnZ2d@earthlink.com> |
The blog from the Apple Event mentioned:
"Apple is dropping many of the connection ports, such as USB, in
favor of wireless technology. But when something needs to be connected,
Apple is offering a single port that can be used for power charging,
display output and accessories. It uses an emerging technology called
USB-C."
I use my current MBP more as desktop, although I do travel for work
so I also use it a lot as laptop. I now have the monitor through one
port, the ethernet through another, one of the USB ports has the main
back up whilst the other has a USB hub that has the thumbdrive I use as
a secondary back up for the articles I write, the iMic so I can record
interviews to Audacity, and USB input for my printer.
My question is if I get a new MBP am I screwed?

Apple is already advertising multiport video adapters, which have a power input (also USB-C), HDMI or VGA output (two different products), and a USB-A connector. Not cheap: US$79 each. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

No doubt someone will also make a docking station for desktop use which give you access to all those at once ... assuming the connection standard allows multiple types at the same time like Thunderbolt does.

Possibly a better value than $29 for a simple FW->Thunderbolt connector! It surprises me that VGA is still supported, as I haven't used same for many years. What drives that decision?

Conference rooms that haven't updated their projectors in a decade or more. It's been a long time since I saw a projector without DVI, but often the morons at hotels pretend the DVI port on the projector is a 500,000volt "death touch" device. -- http://2blog.kreme.com And there were all the stars, looking remarkably like powered diamonds spilled on black velvet, the stars that lured and ultimately called the boldest towards them...

A Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter is not a "simple" peripheral. It incorporates a Firewire controller chipset (MAC plus PHY), as well as the necessary Thunderbolt interface hardware, and probably some power management. I'm surprised it was that cheap, especially given how much Apple charges for Thunderbolt cables. The Ethernet adapter may be a little simpler internally (no power distribution, and I expect Ethernet controllers are cheaper than Firewire controllers). Compare the USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter Apple is now advertising for the new MacBook, which is exactly the same price as the Firewire adapter (US$29). It probably has a single chip inside to act as a 1-port USB hub. The new display adapters need a DisplayPort to HDMI or VGA converter, something to split the alternate protocol away from USB 3.1, and a small USB hub. Compare them to the iPad display adapters, which are only US$49. The only difference obvious to the user is that the MacBook adapter has an extra USB socket on it, which apparently makes it worth $30 more. > It surprises me that VGA is still supported, as I haven't used same for > many years. What drives that decision? Many projectors are still in use which have VGA but not HDMI input, and I expect they are installed all over the place, e.g. hotel confererence rooms and business meeting rooms. My user group retired our old projetor just over a year ago, mainly because we wanted 16:10 aspect ratio instead of 4:3. The old one was still going strong after about 12 years. It only had VGA and composite inputs. The new one has way more input options. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Kurt Ullman: > > ...the new macbook has one port and there will no doubt be a dock of some > > sort. Aldo Raine: > Yeah, I'm sure that will work well and be widely accepted--- kinda' like > Thunderbolt has been ;-) They were all like "You're a Creative Pro. You must have FireWire! You must have Gigabit Ethernet! You must have a 17" MacBook Pro!" Then they were all like Obi-Wan Kenobi, waving their hand in front of our faces and saying "You don't need FireWire or Ethernet. You don't need a larger display for graphics. You need Thunderbolt!" So we look at each other and say "FireWire and Ethernet aren't the ports we're looking for. Move along." Now it seems as if we're moving toward "You don't need ports at all!" -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

The problem (until someone makes a double adapter) could be charging the laptop while using an external USB drive, for example.

Not a problem at all, actually. Apple is already showing on the store two adapters that provide precisely that functionality: <http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter> <http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MJ1L2AM/A/usb-c-vga-multiport-adapter> Both include this text: "while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable."
