#70265 — Stealth upgrade ?

FromJF Mezei <jfmezei.spamnot@vaxination.ca>

SubjectStealth upgrade ?
Message-ID<54efc1d3$0$64427$c3e8da3$b280bf18@news.astraweb.com>
Laptop. 10.10.1

Used to be that opening the clamshell rarely caused the WiFi signal to
connect. This week, it magically worked everytime I opened the laptop.

I do not use the laptop long enough for it to prompt me to install newer
versions of the OS.

Since 10.10.1 is out of date, I have to assume Apple would issue
"covert" patches for it, the types that are pushed to the laptop
automatically without user intervention, right ?

Is there some log that shows all software updates applied to the
machione, eother overtly or covertly ?

His not-so-subtle way of trolling Apple, as usual.

Ah, you weren't aware of this. Unfortunately, the process is not
automated, so Apple employs UN operatives, Masonic Jews, Obama's Muslim
hordes, the Elders of Zion, the minions of the New World Order, and
sundry Papists to do the covert installations. Supervision rests with
the Federal Reserve. But keep that under your hat.

Best to keep it under your tin foil hat, as typical fedoras do not block
extraterrestrial and government covert radio waves.

The guys at MIT actually looked at this and found that tin (actually
aluminum) foil tends to concentrate and not repel signals in the main
governmental frequencies.

I see! Well, I'm anything but an expert on the matter of avoiding
covert government and extraterrestrial influences. So I'll have to defer
to those who are in-the-know! : )

Sheesh... The ignorance of some people never fails to astound me! That's
only if you're one of the idiots stupid enough to build the hat with the
shiny side *IN*. Everybody else knows that if the shiny side is out,
you're safe.

I get best result from the non-stick stuff, with theshiny side out. It's
expensive, but protecting my family is worth every penny.

I am surprised no one has mentioned that it needs to be double strength
(heavy duty) alum. foil, and double layered over the pate.

Hmm. I did get a phone call from a young man sporting an outrageous
Subcontinental accent advising me that my computer was infecting the
Internet and offering to help out with the problem if I had a credit
card handy. Is this related to Apple's iPush updates?

Doesn't Apple's covert NDA agreement prohibit you from discussing this
in public, Warren?

Are you sure?? Not unlike covert updates, you could have unknowingly
signed it, and Apple did not tell you about it!

Didn't I just tell you not to talk about this?

It sort of falls apart when he says, "Okay then, now point your mouse at
the 'Start' button and press that ..."

Many things can change that behavior. You could have restarted the
computer since the last time you tried. Cache files may have been
automatically deleted. Something about your WiFi access point may have
changed. Neighboring access points may have changed. You may have
deleted unnecessary remembered networks from the System Preferences >
Network > WiFi > Preferred Networks list. The list goes on.

Interesting that you immediately jump to the conclusion that a system
update must be the cause.

And now it's a "covert" system update from the ever nefarious Apple!
Yes, that must be it!

App Store > Updates. Stop with the nonsense. Apple isn't out to fuck
with your head, no matter how many times you make that insinuation.

Because the laptop changed behaviour (improved) without any other
changes or reboot to router, reboot to laptop, messing with the system
preferences etc.

I did not say nefarious. But you should be aware, and it was revealed
that Apple is able and has pushed security updates transparently to
users, it is one of the capabilities that recent versions of OS-X have.

Do those show the updates that are done under the hood without going
through the App store ?

As I already mentioned and you conveniently trimmed because it doesn't
support your "Apple is out to get me" theory, there are plenty of other
potential reasons. I'm not listing them all for you. If you choose to
believe Apple is fucking with your head, so be it.

"Covert" was sufficient.

*covert*
adjective |ˈkōvərt, kōˈvərt, ˈkəvərt|
1 not openly acknowledged or displayed: covert operations against the
dictatorship.

Either you don't know what that word means, or you are disingenuously
claiming that Apple did not acknowledge or display that the update was
applied, both of which are untrue.

Systems that were updated displayed a notification stating that the
update was applied, as shown here:

<http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/12/apple-automatically-patches-macs-to-fix-severe-ntp-security-flaw/>

Apple published information about the update on their web site as well:

<http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT6601>

The update was not automatically installed on any Macs running 10.8,
10.9, or 10.10 where the owner did not enable the "Install system data
files and security updates" option in System Preferences > Software
Update / App Store preferences, and the update was not automatically
installed at all on any Macs running 10.7 or earlier.

Mac users are in full control, and nothing about this is "not openly
acknowledged or displayed" as you claim. This is just more of your
typical Apple trolling on display.

It was revealed? Anyone who has visited System Preferences > Software
Update (10.7) or System Preferences > App Store (10.8, 10.9, or 10.10)
since the year 2011 has seen the option to automatically install
security updates. Apparently you have been living under a rock the past
4 years.

Of course. The NTP security update was displayed there, along with all
of the rest of them. Apple isn't hiding anything from you.
