i'm not the one who originally said it.

the fact that you asked 'why would they want to????' means the original
comment went whoosh clear over your head.

Well, Dell about owns the business computer market, the gaming market
(with the Alien line/XPS line). Thinkpad is still a business leader, but
the business desktop market is now all Dell. Come here to Austin and see
how Dell owns this place.

Some much so that we have 300,000 machines, none of which are Dells.

Hardly. I lived in Austin for 20 years. Dell wishes it owned Austin.

Were you here when the big Dell facility went up in Round Rock? The
baseball team plays in Dell stadium, Dell still has a big place in the N
Austin area(near Plugerville). Even IBM still has a presence here.
Apple is here also, they were thinking of moving to a new site in Cedar
Park, do not know the status of that plan. TWiT TV, Leo Laporte's netcast
network, came here to Austin in October to set up the web hosting site
for TWiT, and planning on doing some other things here.
I would love to see Apple move here to Texas.

For me that does not equate to Dell owning Austin - not by a long shot.

They have presence in many cities.

Apple's does have a support center near Cedar Park off Parmer just up
the road from Mopac.

Yep. I'm aware of all of that. I just moved away in 2012 and still work
with folks in Austin.

Yeah, but Apple doesn't need or want any of that Windows stuff to
maintain.

Besides, you missed Neill's and my jokes.

I do not use Windows stuff, I use enterprise Linux. I was referring to
Linux servers. I did mention that extreme gamers and such use the
Alienware high-end laptops/towers, loaded with expensive hardware. I use
Linux on my Thinkpads, my HP laptop, OSX 10.4.11 on my iMac G4, and IBM
PC-DOS 7 to play all my old DOS games.

They should buy Microsloth ... repoertedly that sunk another 9%
yesterday despite their recent announcements of OS X rip-off "Windoze

Why would they want to? This is a serious question, unlike the same
question I asked about buying Michael Dell, which was a humorous
question considering the history there.

Microsoft has little, if anything, that Apple needs or wants.

Other than lots (and lots and lots and lots) of corporate customers. Apple
is essentially nowhere in corporates. And will stay that way unless they
do something about their server line. Of course, they might not care, but
they were happy enough to talk to us (I work for a very large corporate).

For Apple to take that on, Apple would have to take over the
development of Windows and of MS Office for Windows, and I am certain
that Apple doesn't want to do that, especially considering that that
would entail support and compatibility with hardware from Apple's
competitors. So Microsoft doesn't have anything that Apple needs.

Want != Need

Apple might be perfectly happy being a consumer company. It is, after
all, making gargantuan amounts of money.

The impression I gained when we met them was that they were definitely
interested in breaking into the corporate market, but had nothing to
offer us, which is a pain, since we have a large, thriving and growing
underground community of Mac users who'd like to officially use them
at work, where they are Forbidden.

The fact is Apple doesn't need Microsoft's help to gain traction in
corporations.

Your employer is behind the times, fighting a losing battle. I've worked
in the tech field for 20+ years in America where many corporations are
now supporting and purchasing Apple products, because employees all the
way up to senior management want to use them at work. When upper
management demands to use iPhones, iPads, and Macs, even corporate IT
departments that are bullheadedly entrenched in Microsoft products have
no choice but to concede.

It might work for the average guy in the cubicle, but the servers are a
different story; probably all running RH/Centos on huge RAID server
hardware.
