Does anyone know what fixes the 10.6 boot hangs waiting for boot drive problem? I haven't figured which incantation or small animal sacrifice fixes it. -- :-<> Siri Seal of Disavowal #000-001. "The" problem? You'll need to explain the exact symptoms in greater detail, since a number of things can cause the boot process to hang waiting for a boot drive. So what are the exact symptoms? If there are any messages displayed on the screen, for instance, what do those messages say, verbatim? Have you been able to boot this machine from another drive or DVD? Have you connected the problem drive to another machine? And so on... -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. The same volume will boot again after some incantation of Disk Utility, changing USB ports, etc. I would just like to know what is the proper incantation everytime, and I'm hoping someone can help. -- :-<> Siri Seal of Disavowal #000-001. You are booting off of a USB-connected drive. From your description, it sounds like the USB connection is not working correctly some of the time. Have you run the Verify Disk (not Verify Permissions) function in Disk Utility on the USB drive? Did it report any errors? It could be the USB hardware in the drive enclosure you are using is flaking out. Or it could be that the USB port on the computer is malfunctioning. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. It's the same error when booting from firewire or internal disk. It's 10.6 only. 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 on the same machine boot just fine from USB, firewire, and internal. It's also sporadic. Sometimes it works, sometimes no. I want to get back to Avernum, darn it! -- :-<> Siri Seal of Disavowal #000-001. Disavowed. Denied. Deleted. 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' It gets down to where it lists USB then stops. If it happens with Firewire, then why would it mention USB? Same question regarding internal disks. Again, more diagnostic information is needed. The system log probably hold much more information than you are divulging. You could wait for the problem to happen and then post a link to the system.log file that has the error message in it. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Do you have a machine which supports 10.6 ? Sometimes a later machine may have hardware which 10.6 does not support. Does it always hang at the same place in the verbose boot ? The "flakey USB" theory would likely result in it hanging in varous places. It it always hangs at same place, it is likely not flakey USB but something incompatible.

I bought it with 10.6 installed. When it hangs it always hangs in the same place. When it doesn't, it breezes right past. -- :-<> Siri Seal of Disavowal #000-001. Disavowed. Denied. Deleted. Transcribing the exact messages on the console (verbose boot) would help. Include the couple of lines before as well (helps set context of where in boot the hang happens).
