I noticed this in Yosemite, but don't recall seeing it in previous versions. If you press the option key when the mouse pointer is in the address field (the one where you enter a URL or search item) in Safari, it changes to a + shape. Anyone know why it does this?

Anyone know why it does this? Does this in the last Safari for Snow Leopard too. You have to click in the address bar, then it changes to a + with option. Does this in a few browsers (not FF though). -- dorayme

If I knew, I would have said. I suspect it is a bug or some sort of
useful feature in other contexts and a programming leftover in a
context where it has no use, bit like your appendix, human.

Anyone know why it does this? What you are describing is what is often referred to as rectangular selection mode. It allows you to select text by drawing a rectangle around the text you wish to select. It's not very useful in single-line text fields, but is enabled by default by Mac OS X so that users may use it in multi-line text fields. You can get a better idea of how it works in an application like TextEdit: <http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/rectangular_selection.mov> If you hold down the Command key instead, you can select multiple disparate or disconnected sections of text as well. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Anyone know why it does this? Confirmed that it does this, but no I don't know why. I wonder if this is the source of some of the "cursor disappearing in Yosemite" complaints I've come across. When I'm running Amadeus Pro, the mouse cursor does change when over a sound track, and I've noticed that since moving to Yosemite, it sometimes doesn't revert to a normal cursor when moving away from that app. Only very occasionally, and I haven't seen it in a while (since 10.10.1 came along? - dunno). -- Of dates and times: %S - Second as decimal number (00–61), allowing for up to two leap-seconds (but POSIX-compliant implementations will ignore leap seconds)

As I explained in Alan's "disappearing cursor" thread, applications can control the cursor in Mac OS X and do sometimes fail to restore or set the cursor back to what it was supposed to be, due to bugs in said applications. While it's always possible that bugs exist in the core OS regarding the setting of the cursor, it's less likely. Very often, it is the application itself that is responsible for the behavior. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google.
