Why quote so much just to say a little?

So others can understand context.

No one would need or want to read all of what you quote to understand
the basics of the exchange deep in a thread. Try editing; I know, it
is a little bit of trouble and has a bit of art to it, but it is
better for *other* generally.

I'm not here to meet other people's needs. As the responses wend their
way further and further from my initial statement(s), I'd like at least
a reference point to what *I* am speaking about even when others decide
to pursue separate other topics.

It may be better for their purposes, or your purposes, but I have my
own purposes. The vast majority of the time I whittle out unrelated
dead wood; in this case it makes no sense to do that. You may continue
to consider other possibilities for me if you like, but the analysis
isn't of much use to me.

Ah, gtr, thank you for invitation - or is it permission to further
analyse the situation. Let me see now...

What are your own purposes? You initially said you did not edit in
this case in order to help *others*. Now you say it makes no sense.
This is quite untrue, it would be relatively easy to cut down to the
relevant points; come on gtr, show a bit of editing bottle!

Less is more and this applies to a lot of things. If this thought
starts to change your life, please consider a small donation, $US
dollars only (I think the American economy is picking up).

Yes; help others understand my intended assertions. There can only be
one person who makes these decisions. Me.

> Now you say it makes no sense.

Out of context, that might seem the case. But what I said was:

"The vast majority of the time I whittle out unrelated dead wood; in
this case it makes no sense to do that." I didn't consider it
contextual dead wood, so I didn't eliminate it.

> This is quite untrue, it would be relatively easy to cut down to the

You may be right, but spending 12 minutes whittling out the four
salient lines from a blurb that large--what the fuck: Nobody's going to
read it anyway. And might would unfairly characterize the discussion as
linear, instead of riddled with tangents.

> Less is more and this applies to a lot of things. If this thought

"Less is more" applies to a lot of things. The rest--not at all. This
conversation for instance. "You oughta be editing long posts so they
don't bother me." "I don't wanna!" "Well you ought to want to take
care of my needs for me." "Should not!" "Do it!" "No!"

Seems I"ve read this dialogue before. A few score times at least. One
more time around the block? I've left you at least 5 elements you can
tease some microscopic contradictions out of: Victory is almost at hand!

Now, surely it quite irrelevant to mention that it is you who makes
decisions in your own posts?

It would not take you anything like that and even if you did a very
rough job, the few folk tossing the issue back and forth would not be
confused.

Note the brilliant job I did in editing here? <g>

To help others when I can, and get help when I need help.

Sounds like me. But "helping others" gratifies my own needs,
particularly when others have been kind in aiding me. I don't pretend
it's a wholly selfless act.

Reminds me of a MAD magazine tableau of little old ladies defending
themselves against Boy Scouts insisting on helping them across the street...

Funny you should be reminded of that: It reminds me of a loaf of bread,
pre-made into roast-beef and pastrami sandwiches, and then put back
into the bread bag that way, which in turn is placed into a paper bag
from a hardware store, and finally then left on a bus-stop bench before
Labor day weekend.

It's funny the odd synaptic connections our brains make while apparent
brain activity lapses!

The point is these are all local papers with their parochial concerns -
although US TV is also not known for understanding what the phrase
"international news" means (hint: it does not mean what happens in
Washington). The papers I listed are all national newspapers (I don't
see the point of a local one).

Don't discount local papers too easily. They carry various official
notices which can have an impact on your life. I'm mainly thinking of
planning permission here, but you get the idea.

It's also nice to find out about activities, bankruptcies, restaurant
closings, gallery showings, concerts et al in your own area rather than
in faraway places.

Anyone who thinks the British tabloids are an alternative to the N.Y.
Times has either never read the Times or the tabloids.

I make important data backups to work, hidden and encrypted, as my
