Yep, at two different insurance companies.

I used Apple II's in CEGEP for BASIC and assembler programming classes.
(Did some assignments on a Commodore 64 at home).

Used (sporadically) classic OS on a project at work - that we migrated
to IBM PC's. Don't recall if that was 68xxx or PPC though.

The switch by Apple to intel was a partial influence on me switching to
Mac. The major influence was Microsoft (Vista) and the fact that I
could migrate PS CS 3 at no cost.

Try 30-100 or more. They were in practically every school in the
nation by the late 1980s.

Also figure that each Apple II in a home setting could have been used
by not only the whole houshold, but in some cases the entire
neighborhood. When I got my IIGS as a kid it was not unusual to have
5-10 other kids all seated in a semicircle around it.

Macintoshes were and still are standard equipment in many universities
and colleges. They were preferred because it was often vastly easier
to set up and maintain a departmental network compared to the Unix and
MS-DOS / Windows alternatives.

In any event there are plenty of people who started with Apple IIs, on
to Classic Macs, and now into today's OS X / iOS machines to judge
whether the standard of quality that built Apple is being maintained.
I judge that while there has been impressive technical progress, it has
come at the expense of the underpinnings of the OS (at least in OS X).
One minor sigh of relief was heaved when Apple abandoned their silly
skeumorphisms though - that's progress.

The junior high that I taught in, 87-94, had both Apple II's and IBM's.
The teacher who had the Apples had a couple of printers, and kids got to
print banners. The head of the dept. had an IBM class where kids were
learning how to use Word Perfect.

My college used Unix for the entire campus, with VT100 terminals all over
the campus, especially in the library. In the computer dept., which was
in the math bldg., they had IBM workstations running AIX.

In my schools, Macs too. Print Shop for banners on dot matrix printers!
Ew, Word Perfect for DOS. I remember AppleWorks for Apple 2s. :D

I remember that in classes that only had one/few computer(s).

When I was in college I had a work-study job supervising a "lab" that
was divided up into about 60 Mac (Pluses and SEs, mostly), two laser
printers, and 8 PCs.

20% of the job was dealing with the laserwriters and the Macs, and most
of that was answering stupid questions. 80$ of the job was dealing with
the PCs, and most of that was trying to get them to stay up and running
long enough for the engineering students to be able to do anything at
all with them.

One of the engineering students was so frustrated with the PCs that he
wrote a CAD program in ... Pascal? on the Mac himself so he could do the
work he was supposed to be doing on the PC.

I'll stack up OS X 10.10 against any previous OS on any platform. It
does far more, and it does it much better. Do you have any idea how long
it's been since I lost work to a computer crash? Years. Literally years.

Nope. 8.0.1 was just fine on our 5 iPhones.

Still didn't affect 5 iPhones here. Not ever problem or bug is
universal. the 8.0.1 one was pretty damn rare, actually.

ios 8.0.1 itself wasn't the problem.

the problem was the over the air update mechanism that did not work
properly.

those who installed 8.0.1 directly had no issues, while those who did
an ota upgrade (which is most people) did.

Didn't affect several iPhones here, either. I also don't have any WiFi
problems with the several computers I have with Yosemite installed. Go
figure.

So these issues didn't happen to you and Apple's software quality gets
an upgrade. Riiiiiiight.

Of course not. What it does mean, though, is that the problem isn't
quite as severe or wide-spread as you might think.

The only point that matters is whether Apple are doing too much, too
fast. The consensus amongst some developers (since the actual bug stats
are quietly locked up at Apple) is that it seems to be growing.

You don't accept that because we can't see the bug reports and measure
it. OTOH when the 'crowd' feels things are going in some direction,
they very often are. "Memory" is not what you'd like to be.

Apple have a bug reporting system that anyone can put a bug into. But
nobody sees the data about the bugs. (The few bugs I've reported have
always come back as "already reported" (or captured or whatever)).

None have been resolved to date.

That kind of attitude towards "bugs" would not fly with enterprise
Linux! RH/Centos/Scientific would be crucified if the bugs were not

Yes, I guess that I am. I know RH software engineers who do nothing but
work on bugs and they are reported and fixed on a regular basis.

apple has lots of engineers working on bugs too.
