Has Apple changed their support policy? About a month ago, I had a
problem with the Contacts App, and Apple support worked the whole issue
with me. Today, I am having a Mail problem on my 2010 iMac, running
Mountain Lion, and when I tried to contact Apple support, my only option
was to pay $19 for a support call or chat? What is going on?

Since your 2010 iMac is well out of warranty I assume, they should have
charged you for the first call. No change, though sometimes you can
get free help even after warranty for no apparent rhyme or reason.

Perhaps the difference is that the Contacts problem affected all my
devices, including my iPhone 5S, which is still under warranty, while
Mail problem only occurs on my 4 year old iMac.

Oh well...

That's probably it. Every time I've called Apple they've been very
good at finding some way to make my Applecare on whichever device 'fit'
the problem I've called about, even when the problem wasn't really on
that device. But I always knew that could change.

Well, yeah that might explain it! : D

Never heard of that. Did you start here?:

Yes, I did. When I got to the page asking what kind of support I wanted,
I was told free support for my product was no longer available, and
coverage would cost $19 US for support fixing a single incident. While I
know that my Applecare ended about a year ago, it is support for some
software that has suddenly gone wonky on my iMac (but not my other Apple
products). This is covered in more detail in my post in
com.sys.mac.apps. I would have thought that Apple would offer support
for this type of thing.

I think they might make occasional exceptions; but that's completely up
to them, and beyond the warranty support you purchased.

Just a thought. Although all of my Apple devices are out of warranty,
what I have always done to fix a problem is uae the resources of this
newsgroup, as there are plenty of knowledgeable people here willing to
help, and use Google, which I have found numerous times to be a
wonderful repository of information on just about anything. Ihave
fixed my Iphone, Ipad, Ipod and smaller issues with my Imac, so my
suggestion is to use thesevailable sources first, even before calling
Apple.

The support groups can be helpful, too. But I also depend on the
newsgroups 8-)
