#57566 — Installing Mavericks from thumb drive

From"John Varela" <newlamps@verizon.net>

SubjectInstalling Mavericks from thumb drive
Message-ID<51W5y0sPNk52-pn2-d1Xd3K2Hdcen@localhost>
After downloading Mountain Lion I copied it to a thumb drive and
then installed to the Macs from that.

Can the same be done with Mavericks?

If yes, what size drive is needed?

yes

16 gig, but it might be possible to stuff it into 8 gig but why bother
since they're so cheap.

My Mavericks installer download was only 5.31 GB.

2 gig free space is tight and 16 gig sticks are under 10 bucks.

How about just saying "Oops. I was wrong. 8gig is enough."

Would that make your head explode?

if you read what i wrote, i said it might be possible in 8 gig.

the point is that why bother with 8 gig when 16 gig is so cheap. from a
quick check online, the difference in price is a couple of bucks.

after it's installed, the 16 gig stick can be used for many other
things. why cheap out and get 8 gig?

but i'm sure that will sail over your head.

And it turns out that it _is_ possible, without "stuffing" anything.

Yet you still have to come up with a specious argument about why the
poster should use a 16GB in order to justify your original (incorrect)
assertion.

2 gig free space *is* stuffing. os x does not like very little free
space, although 2 gig likely won't matter with just an installer
running.

the point that you miss is that an 8 gig stick is a waste of money when
you can get double the space for a buck or two more (or possibly less
if it's on sale). once the install is done, a 16 gig stick will be much
more useful. there's no point in bothering with an 8 gig stick anymore.

try 2 gig free on your main hard drive and see how well that works out
for you. the system will almost certainly be corrupted when os x runs
out of space, a bug that won't ever be fixed. that's why i said
stuffed.

Nonsense. No free space at all is needed on a volume with only an OS
X installer on it.

> try 2 gig free on your main hard drive and see how well that works out

A volume containing only an OS X installer does not require any free
space. Perhaps you forget that Apple shipped OS X installers for years
on CDs and DVDs, without any free space on them.

Oh. Wait. It's nospam. I shouldn't have bothered.

and perhaps you forgot that read-only media doesn't have free space and

The weasel cannot accept that he might be wrong about anything. ; )

An 8GB stick is all you need for a Mavericks thumb drive installer.

You are dealing with weaselboy. He will *never* admit he was wrong.

He was wrong. There is absolutely no reason to use a USB stick over 8GB.
Even if you wanted to put other programs on the installer, you have many
GB of extra room.

I've done just that with my 8GB stick - SuperDuper, various disk
utilities, and other system diagnosis and setup type apps, and even
backup disk images for restoration to a new system.

I've been using a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler G3 for the past few years as
a Mac OS X installer stick for various versions of OS X, up to and
including Mac OS X 10.9, and no "stuffing" was involved. Each release
fits just fine on it without any modification, and installation is *way*
faster in operation than any CD/DVD/hard drive I've used in the past. My
anecdotal evidence says there's no reason at all not to use an 8GB size
if that's what you have available to you.

If you don't have a stick, then I agree you should purchase the largest
size you can afford. I see Kingston DataTravelers have come way down in
price since I purchased mine. Amazon has the SE9 model at these
price/size combinations at the moment:

8GB for $5.95:

16GB for $9.95:

32GB for $16.95:

64GB for $32.74:

*that* is my point.
the price is too close to bother with 8 gig anymore.

So if the poster had asked "what is the most cost effective size of
usb stick right now?" you could have defended the 16GB answer.

If the poster asked "how big a USB stick do you need to use as a Mavericks
installer," the answer is clearly 8GB.

Your inability to acknowledge that is a pathology.

does someone need to explicitly spell things out for you? he obviously
wanted to buy a stick, otherwise why ask. if he had a bunch of sticks
in a drawer, he could easily try one and see what worked.

the only inability here is your inability to comprehend what i
originally wrote, where i specifically said it might fit on an 8 but
that there's no point in bothering with 8 anymore because the price
difference is negligible. a 16 can be used for many more things after
the install is done than an 8 would. there's no point in buying an 8.

why is this concept lost on people? think long term solutions for a
change.

Yes, it clearly couldn't be that the OP asked before trying. Why on
Earth would anyone do that? LOL...

Because that's not actually what you said, weasel.

Shall we recap?:

1. The OP asked specifically, "what size drive is needed?".

2. Mr. Weasel answered, "16 gig, but it might be possible to stuff it
into 8 gig" - as if somehow 8GB would require "stuffing" of some sort,
possibly enticing the OP to infer that it might take additional work on
the OP's part to use an 8GB stick. And while immediately after that
weasel mentioned, "why bother since they're so cheap", that was *after*
he indicated 16GB was needed and 8GB would require the nebulous
additional work of "stuffing". So the OP could be excused for drawing
the conclusion that he might want to avoid using an 8GB stick - even one
sitting right beside him in a desk drawer. I suppose if the OP drew that
conclusion, weasel would just blame the OP for "misunderstanding"
weasel's words.

3. Noticing that the OP might draw incorrect conclusions from weasel's
advice, several nice folks then indicated that, contrary to weasel's
suggestion that 16GB was needed, 8GB works just fine.

4. Weasel then changed his tune and said he only meant that 16GB was
cheaper than 8GB (Duh.), which clearly isn't what the OP asked. Again,
the OP asked what was needed.

5. Next, weasel said the reason he tried to deter the OP from using an
8GB stick is because weasel somehow knows the OP must not have an
existing USB stick, suggesting that the OP wouldn't have asked
otherwise. Only, it's not clear at all from the OP weather the OP does
or does not have an existing stick in their possession.

Pop goes the weasel!
