I switched recently to Lion my Mac Mini seems to handle. It didn't when
Lion was launched, but now it seems fine. And there was/is absolutely
nothing wrong with SL.

Anyway, just FYI.

Yep: what *were* you thinking? I was trying to work it out!

I still run Snow Leopard on my 2GB 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, because I continue
to use some great little programmes that I've been using for years and
years, and they will not be able to run under later o.s.'s.

However I keep wondering if I ought to upgrade ... and what I might
safely upgrade *to*, given the "puny" size of my once mega-Mac.

Upgrading my Mac and o.s. used to be a major issue when I used to work
(!), but these days I don't use QuarkXPress and other monstrous
programs. Therefore I would *like * to stick with what I know works, and
not upgrade simply because Apple would like me to.

I'm on a Mac Mini, I think it's a 2007 model which I bought in 2009. A
1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo. Most time of the upgrade went into the download.

TIP: after the download quit the installation and copy the installation
file (in your applications folder) to an external drive. It will be lost
after installation is finished.

The upgrade itself went quickly and smoothly. I had the original Snow
Leopard DVD and partitioned my hard drive in a small SL and a large Lion
partition. Just in case so I could restore SL from the Time Machine
backup.

Lion (10.7.5) is really amazing. It's fast and responsive and everything
just works like before. Highly recommended. It wasn't like that when
Lion was launched.

And how does "My bad, ignore." improve things?

It could be argued that persons who insist on using an OS that is three
generations obsolete are the ones leaving their Macs vulnerable to
attacks.

Anyway, why do I never hear about these alleged attacks on the Mac?
Newspapers, the music industry, the movie industry, publishing,
photography, design, television, big science--all big Mac users and all
attractive to hackers, yet I never hear about any of them being hacked
Windows-style. Makes me wonder if the risk is still overstated.

I agree, but why 'throw away' a perfectly good computer? People are
happy just to print something, play a game and occasionally send an
email. Most of the time they are safe. And Apple was until recently the
anti-malware definitions (XProtect).

Sure, I totally agree. After the MacDefender, Java and other scares I
started scanning my Mac with VirusBarrier Express. I am almost sure the
app, or any other AV app will never find a virus (if you're careful).

Who said anything about throwing one away?

The claims about attacks are all based on statement by agenda driven
agencies such as the anti virus, security companies. I don't believe a
word of the shite they talk.

Some of us are still using PowerPC-based Macs, believe it or not. : )
Not that I'm complaining about the lack of updates. I'm well accustomed
to Apple's progress and habit of leaving the old in favor of the new. So
this news comes as absolutely no shock or disappointment to me,
personally.

Indeed. My reaction: "Meh."

It has nothing to do with what I insist on using. Neither my MacBook nor
Mac Mini will support anything beyond Snow Leopard. It's not under my
control that Apple doesn't make a newer operating system that works with
their legacy hardware.

That's the hand of Jobs reaching out to tell you to spend
more money....

I refuse to downgrade from 10.6 because I have useful
programs that won't run on anything later.

I am not alone after all! Demon "up"graders denigrate my similar choice.

I could be wrong, but to my recollection, you tend to get criticized not
on your unwillingness to upgrade, but more for your *reasons* for not
doing it.

I have repeatedly pointed out the software problems involved. Some
people seem to be made of money and happy to dump familiar useful
software.

I'm referring to your general disparaging comments about upgrading *all*
software - not just this particular instance.

I'm running 10.7.5 on this old Mac Pro because it _technically_ can't be
upgraded. I know that installing a new video card (these days pretty
much any video card) and Mavericks is quite simple. I haven't done it
because, um, I like MTNW ...

You should know that my remarks were directed towards the entity known
as Erliar, and not you or anyone else. Also, my remarks were not meant
to convey there is never a reason not to upgrade. I myself have Macs
that will never be upgraded past 10.6. I even have Macs in my possession
that will never run anything past classic Mac OS 6 or 7.
