*blink*...

They didn't - they renamed it, as anyone who just looks can see:

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/finder/desktop_sort_by.png>

You can also see the "Show View Options" menu command in that very same
menu, which leads to this window, offering plenty of options for
arranging items on the desktop:

As you can see, it's anything but rocket science.

Use your eyes - that's what they are there for!

It's in 10.8.5, but it's called "Sort by".

In SL, it says "Arrange By" for both the desktop and other folders. Not
so for ML. I haven't done a thorough analysis, but it seems that nearly
the same functionality is in both, but the way to get to given result
differs from SL to ML.

It's received a name change, with no apparent change in
functionality, from 'Arrange by', to 'Sort by'.

> In SL, it says "Arrange By" for both the desktop and other folders.

As it appears that you are having difficulty navigating the Finder
View menu, give this a shot:

    1) Close all Finder windows, making certain the Finder is still
        active.

    2) Use ⌘-J on your keyboard.

    3) In View Options dialog that appears, choose 'None', under the
        'Sort by' drop-down menu.

This should provide you with the apparent disarray you seek.

If you are experiencing a situation, where icons are piling one on top
of the other, do consider using the 'Snap to Grid' option. This
should allow the Desktop icons to remain in the general vicinity of
where they are dropped, while making certain they're not overlapping.
(You'll also find that you can vary the grid spacing, to your heart's
content, from the View Options dialog window.)

Seriously, the Desktop isn't a good choice for a place to store
documents, aliases or much of anything else. From the sound of
things, you're looking at a desktop similar to what I've grown to
expect from the average Windows user, who allow the clutter to grow,
as each installation insists it's so important that it should take up
real estate by placing an alias to itself randomly on a user's
desktop.

I do not have any trouble navigating the Finder View menu.

I do not seek disarray.

I DO want icons to stay where I drop them, not (sometimes) to wind up in
the upper lefthand corner.

Sometimes, I *want* icons to overlap -- for example, if they have some
characteristic in common.

> (You'll also find that you can vary the grid spacing, to your heart's

I want the grid spacing to be "zero" (i.e. where I drop an icon is where
I want it to stay). That does not seem to be an option.

Your notion of what is a suitable occupant of the desktop seems to
differ from mine. I want to put *whatever I want* there, *where* I want
it to be. And mostly, that works just fine. It solves the "out of sight,
out of mind" problem for me in an effective way.

To summarize: I do not need help in setting up how I want the desktop to
behave. I've been setting up Mac desktops since OS 4. I was asking about
a situation when it does *not* behave properly (i.e. placing an icon
very far from where I dropped it).

Don't be silly. Of course it's an option. It's View > Sort by > None.

Suggesting that it's not an option just because very occasionally it
doesn't work as it should is just plain disingenuous. Again, all
software has bugs. You seem to have found one. There's nothing you can
do about it except wait for Apple to fix it. As this seems to be an edge
case, the waiting period may be longer than if it were a very common
problem. It's probably best not to let it ruin your day. ; )

I'm not sure what more you want anyone here to say about it. We've
discussed the gamut of the issue. We've asked you questions you refuse
to answer. We've offered suggestions you've refused to follow. And
you're still apparently dissatisfied. *shrug* Nobody here owes you a
solution, BTW. We're all just trying to help. Do keep that in mind.

I've known about Mac OS X's desktop viewing options since they came into
being. I'm a little surprised that any long-time Mac user doesn't know
about them. It seems like some people don't explore software nearly to
the extent that I do.

Yes, as I said:

Options, this gives you choices for the desktop too."

But OP seems not to have that option according to his replies.

Doubt that. The View Options (⌘ J) facility has been part of Mac OS X
Finder for *quite* a few Mac OS X releases. I think it's more likely he
simply didn't pay attention to what was right in front of him:

Please note that the choices available in the drop-down "View" menu
differ depending on whether it is invoked from desktop or from an
"ordinary" folder. In a rather "un-Apple-like" way, some of (but not all
of) the same options are available, but in different places, depending
on what the target is.

Yep. I knew that years ago. The menu options pertain to the front-most
window (which can be the desktop itself if no window is selected).

Show View Options window is always there though.

But its offerings are context dependent. For the desktop, they are more
limited.

That is the difference between the desktop choice and the ordinary
folder one, but neither offers the "option" I was originally asking
about, which is "Put the Icon Where The Cursor Was When I Let Go The
Mouse Button".

Ditto. No option says to just let the icon drop where it is.

In my original post, I observed that that does not always work on the
desktop, and asked if anyone knew how to fix it.

If you've found the "put it right there" choice, I'd like to know where
it is.

Both alter the desktop itself on SL.

This is not true in SL at least. You have choices in this OS of None
(the one you maybe want), Snap to grid (but basically almost where you
want but tidy) and then other choices.

It is there in SL where I said, in the Show View Options in the drop
down menu on Arrange By. I would be surprised if it was not there on
your OS - but I won't bet the house on it. <g>

May I suggest you *try* a few of these options and see if your OS then
gets its act together in terms of knowing where icons are. Temporarily
choose the option of modified, you can choose another option later.
Say what happens to your pile up problem after these tests.

It may be that if I choose one of the constrained arrangement options,
icons would not occasionally pile up in the corner. Frankly, I don't
care if that would "fix" the problem, because I do not care for any of
the constrained arrangements and would not use them anyway.

No one is suggesting you stick with an option you don't want. The
suggestion is you actually try some options mentioned and see the
effects. The exercise might train your computer, shake it out of
pile-ups, you can return to the "none" option mentioned.

The option for placing icons where you want has been mentioned by me
and possibly others, this would be the final option after
experimenting and then you would see how you stood with regard to the
pile-ups.

You seem to be reluctant to do any experimenting using options
mentioned, to change them, to see the effect on your computer. I am
baffled at your reluctance?

You can lead a horse to water...

Needed is a nice solution, in a nice box, with a nice ribbon and with
batteries included. <g>

That is incorrect. The option you refer to is at View > Show View
Options > Sort by > None. It works most of the time, but occasionally
does not work correctly, which is why this thread was started to begin
with. Saying the option isn't there is disingenuous. The option is
there; but as is the case with a whole lot of software, there is a bug
that prevents it from working properly all the time in all cases.

Incorrect. See above.

And in a reply to you, someone asked how your desktop view settings were
configured. Then you stated no such settings were available. Others
tried to show you where those settings are. You never did answer the
question, and now you are coming full circle (still without answering
the question). Loop complete.

Others have told you previously. I just told you again.

Th fact that it may not work 100% of the time has also been discussed ad
nauseam.
