Finally ready for Catalina on this Mac.

DL'd the installer and ... got the message (subject) during the 
post-restart phase about 10% in.

Attempted it again after a full power down.  No joy.

Tried Recovery Mode/First Aid/Disk Repair (whatever it's called).

It claimed "Repaired" in a suspiciously quick time.

Tried to install Catalina ... same error again.

So unless there's something else I can try, I'll resort to a clean 
install next week.

	The volume Macintosh HD was formatted by hfs_convert
	(945.200.129) and last modified by apfs_kext (945.275.7).
	Checking the object map.
	error: (oid 0x400000016810a) om: btn: invalid o_cksum
  	(0x82dc03ba1943e020)
	Object map is invalid.
	The volume /dev/rdisk2s1 could not be verified completely.

	Operation successful.

I find that last declaration ironic...

This is a known, albeit uncommon, issue. I have not run into it on any
of my own machines, but did have this issue on one of my wife's laptops.
However, since it was the one provide by her work she had to turn it in
and get a replacement.

I had problems with apfs volumes like this. The only solution I found was to 
do backups (both SuperDuper/CarbonCopyCloner and TimeMachine), then a clean 
install on a wiped volume. I used Software Migration as part of the final 
installation and it picked up a surprising number of things (not my database 
or web site configuration). It took 4+ hours after the initial install.

In the end, the volume is OK now and I'm checking it for consistency 
regularly.

And oddly enough, Disk Utility under recovery mode gives a clean bill of 
health:

It would still fail the install.  And I never (or rarely) install a .0 
v. of an OS.  I let the usual dust settle first.  (Yes I know your 
standard answer to that).

however, for the disk errors, try disk warrior.

or if you're really bored, back up, reformat, clean install and migrate.

big sur is the settling of catalina's dust.

that said, you could wait a month or so for 11.1.

Backup is always up to date (within a week, anyway).

It's looking more and more like that is exactly what will happen.

i forgot that it doesn't yet support apfs, so nix that suggestion.

If I rely on TM, then it's up to date as of an hour ago.  But I don't 
rely on TM, so more important stuff will get a full manual dump to 2 
external HD's first.

Some stuff is excluded from TM: Linux VM's (I don't care if I lose 
them); Windows VM's (one is important and the other is too (ish)) and 
other oddballs that I'd rather not lose but that I have single 
standalone backups ... somewhere.

I bought this iMac in 2013.  This would be the 3rd clean install since 
then.  Not too bad albeit annoying.

Anyway, next weekend.   Maybe.  Depends on the weather and whatever 
herself has in store for me.

If you have backups, there's really no need to repair anything. Just
erase and restore.
