You are both right in a way, but there is an in-between. Some actors
bring a lot of themselves into their roles, others do a pretty good
job of being anything but.

He certainly played his fair share of quite unpleasant characters,
perhaps that is hard for some people to dissociate themselves from.

I think _good_ actors are good precisely because they can play
characters who are not like themselves.

That other thing, to paraphrase Truman Capote, is not acting, it's
being.

Yep. Well, he never had the looks to play a Hollywood leading man.
Plus he was good enough and lucky enough to get a lot of really
interesting, complex roles.

You are reverting to black and white thinking, was it you that accused
nospam of this at one stage!

As I said, there is something in between. Everyone is a bit like
everyone else in some respects, sometimes there are gulfs to be
crossed and yes, a good actor crosses these gulfs.

But interesting actors can also bring some of the parts of themselves
to their roles.

Not sure what you mean by black and white thinking in this context, or
what this has to do with nospam (who is more of a sophist than a
black-and-white thinker).

Good actors inhabit their characters and show the characters to the
audience (not the actor's personality).

Competent actors can behave like their characters _if_ their
characters are like themselves.

Bad actors don't behave like real people at all (yes, I mean you,
Keanu Reeves).

It isn't black and white - it's a range.

What I _am_ saying is that thinking an actor is a snob because they
played a part that is supposed to be a snob is simply a mistake. Just
like Julia Roberts isn't really a hooker, and George Clooney isn't
really a doctor.

> As I said, there is something in between. Everyone is a bit like

Yes, that's true.

> sometimes there are gulfs to be
> crossed and yes, a good actor crosses these gulfs.

Also true.

> But interesting actors can also bring some of the parts of themselves
> to their roles.

Also true - in fact I suspect that one of the secrets is identifying
things in your character that you can see in yourself.

Nevertheless, it is a mistake to watch a great actor and think you are
seeing that actor's personality in the character he or she is playing.

However, there is something about their body and voice which does tend
to transcend any acting they do and offer a constant "look and feel"
across roles. And I think this is what I got from the few movies of
Hoffman I saw. (and I only saw a few). Their physique also tends to
typecast them into certain roles. One would not cast Hoffman as the
athletic type in an action movie.

I just checked imdb. The only movies I remember watching with him in it:
Twister (he was much younger)
Talented Ripley ( mellow guy who likes jazz and appears to always be high)
Mission Impossible III (bad guy).

So while I guess I shouldn't typecast him at all because this is a very
small representation of his work. But I still get the impression that
his role in Ripley reflected the real person most. And when you factor
that he was a drug user, perhaps it was the best representation (smooth
talking slow moving guy who likes Jazz and appears to always be high).

One huge surprise for me I discovered a year or two ago happened when
watching "The Undiscovered Country". The young vulcan traitor had a
familiar voice. I checked on IMDB and low and behold, it was Samatha
from Sex and the City. Couldn't be more different ! But because of
dress/hair/makeup (and age difference) Kim Catrall was not the same
person physically in the two movies. So it becomes very easy to never
make the association between different roles. It is also interesting
that in ST-6, Katrall appears short, while in Sex in the City, she
appeared tall. And she gets an award for best award reception speech
"you don't know how many men I've had to sleep with to get this award".

When I see an actor, I tend to try to figure out if I would like to meet
her/him. So yeah, I type cast the person based on certain maneurisms and
facial expresions/voice when they are acting.

Sure. Hoffman was overweight for example. His voice is very different
in different roles - I honestly don't know if you heard Hoffman's
voice in "The Savages" and his voice in "Charlie Wilson's War" without
seeing him if you'd notice they were the same actor.

In fact, even _with_ seeing them, you might not notice they are the
same actor.

You could be right - who knows? All I'm saying is that he's played
many _very_ different characters. The original assertion was that he
was a snob and swaggart. I'm not sure what that second word means,
but these assertions have nothing to do with who he actually was -
only to do with the roles that the person has seen him in.

I kind of do the opposite. Too often I've had the experience of
really respecting an actor - because of how good they are, only to
find out something about the real person that is disappointing. I'm
looking at you, Elizabeth Moss (Scientologist) and you, Daniel Day
Lewis (fake Pushkin scholar).

If someone is a great actor I prefer to just think about them as a
great actor and try not to worry about who they really are.

I dream of a time when there are no actors, that it is all done by
film makers (the visuals like painters do visuals, sometimes
photo-realistic; the sound like synthesisers do sound but much more
sophisticated to include every possible human voice.)

You, George Lucas and James Cameron.

At the moment James Cameron still needs actors though (as do animation
makers) ... George Lucas now only dreams of diving into his money bin
full of cash Disney gave him, just like Scrooge McDuck:

I don't think "acting" describes any events in Avatar or the recent
trio of Star Wars movies.

But in any case, you were relating your dream, and I'm pointing out
that Lucas and Cameron have the same dream.

In the case of Avatar, there is some serious acting you don't realise is
happening. Remember that the actors do not actually see what is
happening because they are just moving in front of a green screen and
everything else is added in CGI post production.

In the case of the CGI bodies, it was still the actors moving and motion
tracking was then applied to their CGI bodies.

This isn't the "drama" acting that you expect of Oscar winning movies,
but it is still acting because they have to pretend to be talking to
some monster even though there is no monster in front of them.

I agree that there are people involved, but I don't think what they did
constitutes serious acting.

"Pretending." Good word. That wasn't acting, it was pretending.

When it comes down to it acting is pretending; it's a matter of degree,
how well one pretends.

You can say the actor is pretending to cry or be angry but it would
not reflect what really goes on. Maybe no actors can do some angry
scenes or sad scenes well without *getting* angry or sad. "Pretence"
glosses over the realities.

Even in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, real actors filmed the roles the
CGI characters would be used for - the scene was usualy filmed with the
actor stand-in and then re-filmed without the stand-in. The stand-in
gave the other actors a visual reference for eye-lines, etc, and gave
the animators a reference for things like shadows being cast.

Well, there are some actors who, regardless of what part they're
acting, are actually playing the same character. William Shatner comes
to mind.

Pacino comes to mind. The list is large.

Right. And although he has done a number of things well, I think I'd
be hard pressed to call Shatner a good actor.

A number of others were also listed like Pacino etc. Perhaps they are
good actors, but not versatile actors as they are very good only in a
fairly narrow range of roles.

There is typecasting from previous movies, but also I think typecasting
due to body and voice. Certain persons have bodies or voices which
simply cannot be believable in certain roles. A tall, athletic guy with
deep voice wouldn't be believable in a role where he is bullied at
school no matter how good an actor he is.

There are actors whose bodies and voices are more "vanilla" and thus are
bvelieable in a wider range of roles.

Animated is interesting because you can get surprised who who voices a
character. Fry in "Futurama" sounded like a young guy in his 20s. Yet,
the person who voiced him was in his 60s by the time the show ended.
